While shopping for floors, a lot of the options can start to look overwhelmingly similar. But what’s actually beneath the surface? We thought we’d share some of the flooring knowledge we’ve picked up over the years to help make your search a little easier.
F L O O R T H E R E C O R D // Wear Layers
A wear layer is exactly what it sounds like. It's the clear, protective layer on top of your flooring that takes on the everyday wear, scratches and scuffs so that the design underneath it doesn’t have to.
With LVP/LVT, wear layers are measured in mils (1 mil = 0.001 inch), and you’ll commonly see:
• 6 mil — lighter residential use and low-traffic areas
• 8–12 mil — a good fit for many everyday households
• 20 mil — popular for busy homes, kids and pets, and some light commercial use
• 22–30+ mil — generally made for heavier commercial and high-traffic areas
Does that mean everyone needs the thickest wear layer they can find? Nope! It’s all about finding what makes sense for your home and how you actually live in it.
And if you're unsure about which one would work best for you, feel free to come and see us.
We are always happy to help. 😄
