It was a great 3 day holiday weekend at the 'old town'. We were a water stop for the Big BAM bike ride on Saturday and we had a constant flow of cyclists stopping in eating homemade cookies, enjoying the cold water and the really cold A/C!
We were also happy to see so many folks traveling the old road this long weekend and still was able to squeeze in a little work inside the diner as well....

We will be open all THREE days of this Labor Day weekend. It will still be hot out but the new A/C is blowing and we are working away on the Diner. Stop in to say 'Hi' and check out our progress!

The weather has been hot, and the classic cars like to stay in the garage until fall, so we wanted to post a few cool rides that stopped out to us the last weekend or two.
We will have several events coming up in the next few weeks so I wanted to get this up sooner than later!

It's a sign! (Well, both literally and figuratively!)
And this is why we built this sign structure bigger and stronger than a normal one would have been built: To withstand these Missouri winds, and to add. remove and change out the smaller ones as needed.
Spencerfest 2026 is on and we will update the event on our page a little later this week.
If you are coming, PLEASE RSVP so we have a headcount to better plan with.

History in the Making Part 3 (or was it 4... or 5??)
Regardless, we FINALLY have HVAC in the Diner and Barber Shop! It has been four long, HOT years while working inside but there had to have so many other things in place before I could even fire these up:
- A new 400A service had to be installed as the old electrical service was not big enough.
- A new electrical panel had to be installed to meet the expanding electrical we are constantly installing on the property.
- We had to trench for new in ground conduit to be ran all along the west and south side of the buildings.
- We had to run electrical and put in (3) disconnects in for this unit and (2) future ones.
- We had to frame out, install and insulate ALL the ceilings and roof deck as we would just be blowing cold air up into a hot ceiling.
- We had to frame out and build the 3 back walls of the Diner to get the area ready for the head unit.
- We had to deal with this heat from the past several weekends while we were installing these components.

All in all, I am one happy boy!
For all of you that have come in and visited us over the past four years and felt the heat inside during these Ozark summers - I thank you for dealing with that!
Now we will start planning the one for the General Store.

A shout out to my neighbor Evan down the road for coming over to help button up the system with me.

It's nice stepping outside after a full day of working on the old place, after greeting people both locally and from all over the world, to catch our place as the sun is setting......
The days are getting shorter, but the work is getting done!

While doing some research on the history of Spencer (the building and the town!) we came across these images from 1980. We have seen photos from the 30's, 40's, 60's, 70's and the 2000's, but not from 1980. This was a treat! It continues to help build the history of Spencer!

Not only are we working hard to preserve and restore our buildings at Spencer, but we’re equally committed to preserving the history of the town itself. New stories, documents, and photos continue to surface — and each one helps us better understand the community that existed here long before Route 66 rolled through.

This incredible photo of the Spencer School, taken in December 1913, was shared with us just recently. Kendall Pierce walked into Spencer a weekend or two ago and said, “I have something that may interest you”. Our Lawrence County Historian, Willie Washam, digitized the image and brought out even more detail.

Whenever we can carve out a little free time (did I really just say that 🤣), we’re gathering, documenting, and preserving everything we can about the original town of Spencer. It played an important role not only in this corner of Missouri, but in the broader story of Route 66 — and we want to make sure that history is never lost again.

The past two weekends was brutal with the weather outside! But that did not stop the travelers from stopping in and checking out our little 'town' and the progress we are making. To say it was busy would be an understatement.
Building this frame took a little longer as they have to be custom built as there are so many variations of measurements when it comes to platform height / stool height / countertop height and so on... If it were a regular counter or even a front desk, it would have been done in no time....
Seating at a restaurant is a science and a little too exact for my taste!
We are focusing on finishing these seating areas as we need to start getting the kitchen appliances finalized and in place.
