Our collection area is made up of wire mesh rather than a full nesting pad. It’s a small design detail that makes a big difference! After an egg rolls out of the laying area, it enters a protected collection area lined with wire mesh. This allows feathers, dirt, manure, hay, and other debris to fall through instead of collecting around your eggs.

Other designs use nest pad material in both the laying and collection areas, which can trap debris and require the pad to be removed and shaken out more often. That additional handling may also lead to premature wear and tear.

By pairing AstroTurf matting in the laying area with wire mesh in the collection area, Best Nest Box gives each material a specific job: comfort where hens lay and cleanliness where eggs wait to be gathered.

"We have a bunch of new laying hens, some of them are laying poorly formed eggs. Yet, these weak eggs (shell-less or cracked sided shell) slide down with the rest of the eggs and have not spoiled the rest of the bunch, as usually would happen back when we used milk crates for nesting. I suppose the slope is just right for the rolling speed. Also, after a rain, with mucky feet, our eggs are still perfectly clean in the roll out tray. I'm so glad I made this investment. After years of egg farming, I wish I would have done this sooner."
