ABOUT THE AUTHOR, TIM CAVERLY: Working 32 years as a Ranger for the Maine Dept. of Conservation, Tim Caverly was constantly educating adults and children about the wonders of the Maine outdoors. While serving 18 years as the Supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, much of the time living with his family year around on the Waterway, Tim entertained and educated his wife and young daughter
and visitors alike with his increasing variety of stories. Tim taught in the Millinocket Middle School. He found a number of students who did not like to read, go to the library, or go outdoors. The same students were however always eager to hear his stories and found themselves accidentally learning and getting exciting about the natural resources just out their doors. From his first book “An Allagash Haunting” Tim and his wife Sue have gone on to develop a series of books for the young reader that lures the reader in with an exciting and/or humorous story that takes place in their own back yard. The stories are more than just a wild Northwoods tale, told by a Maine outdoorsman. They serve to educate the reader about our state’s natural resources; inform the reader of the exciting history of a negated part of the state and encourage the reader to get out and share those same places and maybe have those same experiences. Male and female principal characters with different cultural backgrounds ensure the reader can identify with the characters. Since 2009, Tim has developed a series of six books. He and Sue have given over 150 programs to over 5000 students in Me., N.H., and MA. In just one year, they travel over 28,000 miles to give these programs. He has spoken to countless civic group, historical societies and sports groups to encourage literacy programs and education about Maine natural resources for our schools and young people. By working with and motivating many groups such as the Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary clubs, school PTO’s and the Allagash Alliance, Tim has been able to provide schools with over 1500 books free of charge and over 300 at reduced cost for schools that would other wide never be able to afford them. Tim has helped turn one of his books into a school play that has been used on multiple occasions by several school systems. The many letters that Tim receives from teachers and students alike attest to effectiveness of his programs. The letters show both the excitement and education of the children and also how it helps the teachers present a part of Maine education that is often underserved by they normal school system. Tim and Sue live in Millinocket. Sue acts as Tim’s editor, proof reader, scheduler, office manager and shares in presenting their programs. She acts as an unofficial Maine tour guide for those unfamiliar with the wonders of Northern Maine. Tim has been a tireless promoter and educator of Maine’s natural resources. His contributions to expanding this knowledge to an age group that is often underserved, to helping our underfunded education system in their literacy programs and educating young and old alike about the wonders of Maine’s great history and resources.
