🐝🥷Bee ninjas! Oregon State University’s Andony Melathopoulos (the coolest bee researcher) came, caught, and documented how many types of native bees are inhabiting our pollinator habitat today. He’s a Jedi when it comes to catching even the quickest of bees. He will bring the sample bees he caught back to the university to profile and begin the documentation to see how many unique species of pollinators we have attracted so far! This is a little mason be he caught in the American Vetch flowers.

That giant cloud of bees in your tree? 🐝
It’s not an attack — it’s a family moving day.

Honey bees swarm when a colony gets strong and healthy enough to grow. The old queen leaves with thousands of worker bees to find a new home, while a new queen will be born and stay behind in the hive. It’s one of the most natural and important parts of the bee life cycle.

Swarming bees are usually focused on protecting their queen, not stinging people. They’re busy, full of honey, and looking for a place to settle.

A swarm doesn’t mean “killer bees.”
It often means your local pollinators are thriving. 🌼🍯

Five generations of Beekeeping is a long time.

It’s his early memories with his grandpa and dad that make me smile the most.

In one of his first recollections with his dad and grandpa they were up making fireweed honey in the mountains near Saint Helens, Oregon.

He got stung in the cheek by hornet when they were out in the bee yard and on the way home he got sick on the floorboard of his grandpa’s truck. In true beekeeper style, grandpa Ed (Edmund)pulled over, cleaned Ryan up and kept going like nothing had happened. It was just another day out in nature, doing what they loved. No hornet or carsickness would put a damper on a good days hard work.

The best part? Ryan tells this story fondly.

Why? Because despite the troubles, he remembers the wonderful moments as well.

The smell of the hot coffee being drank out of the classic green Stanley thermoses as the sun rose. The feel of sun on his face baking in those childhood freckles. And a deep sense of security with his grandpa and dad at his side as they looked over each beehive.

Despite a few bumps along the way, it was a day well spent, with his favorite people.

I hope today is a good day for all of you as well, winding roads notwithstanding. 💛🐝🌻

Pollinator habitat. 🐝🌸🌻🪻🌼

It’s always a work in progress. Each new plot we plant has slightly different soil, drainage, rainfall, and sunlight 🌞 availability.

Here in Eastern Oregon, spring is just beginning. Even the daffodils 🌼 in my yard haven’t bloomed yet. We are anticipating the bloom that will begin very shortly in our pollinator habitat as the bees come home for summer.

Now is a great time to sew some wildflower seeds into your space and create your own pollinator habitat.😍

🥰 We are so moved by the kind words as you discover our family and bees in National Geographic’s, Secrets of the Bees docuseries.

This is a true family effort:
I, Stacie, run the retail and wholesale side of our business, while Ryan leads our commercial operation.

Together with our 6th generation beekeeper daughters, we’re working through our nonprofit, The Bee Foundation, to protect and expand the pollinator habitats that are so desperately needed for these amazing little creatures to thrive🐝❤️.
