Let’s answer some of my most asked questions
🌼 HOW TO KEEP YOUR MUMS ALIVE & BEAUTIFUL ALL FALL! 🌼
Those big, beautiful fall mums you bring home are packed with blooms — but there are a few tricks to keeping them looking amazing all season long! 🍂
🌱 FIRST: DON’T PANIC ABOUT THOSE ROOTS!
When you buy your mums, they are often very root-bound in their pots. This is NOT necessarily a bad thing! It’s one of the reasons they can be so full and flower-packed.
BUT… being root-bound means there isn’t much soil left around those roots to hold water. 💧
That means mums left in their original pots will need to be watered significantly more frequently.
🌼 WANT TO MAKE YOUR MUMS EASIER TO CARE FOR?
➡️ Plant them in the ground OR
➡️ Move them into a larger pot with fresh soil.
The additional soil gives the roots more room and, most importantly, provides more material to hold onto moisture. This helps keep your mums hydrated and happy throughout the fall. 🍂💦
🌱 MUMS ARE ALSO HEAVY FEEDERS!
Adding a little fertilizer to the soil can help keep your mums happy, healthy and blooming beautifully all fall long. A balanced fertilizer added according to the product directions is a great way to give them the extra nutrition they need.
💧 AND HERE’S A REALLY IMPORTANT WATERING TIP!
DON’T WATER YOUR MUMS OVER THE TOP! 🚫🌧️
Pouring water over the foliage can promote breakage, especially when the plants are large, full and heavy with flowers.
Instead, water at soil level, along the side of the pot underneath the foliage. 🌱💦
Get that water directly to the root ball where the plant needs it most!
🍂 A FEW MORE MUM TIPS:
💧 CHECK THEM DAILY! Especially if they’re still in their original pots. On warm, windy or sunny days, they can dry out FAST.
🌱 WATER DEEPLY. Make sure the entire root ball gets thoroughly hydrated.
🪴 MAKE SURE THEY DRAIN! Mums don’t want to sit in stagnant water.
🌼 GIVE THEM SUN! Mums are happiest with plenty of bright sunlight.
🌱 GIVE THOSE ROOTS ROOM. Planting them in the ground or moving them into a larger container gives them more soil to hold moisture and support healthy growth.
🌼 AND REMEMBER — THE BIGGER THE MUM, THE MORE WATER IT NEEDS!
Your mum isn’t necessarily thirsty because something is wrong… sometimes she’s just THAT THIRSTY. 😂
Give those roots some room, give them a little food, water them properly, and your mums can keep putting on a gorgeous fall show for weeks! 🍁🌼
Happy fall gardening! 🍂
