Since Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, millions of readers have been swept up into this tale of sin, solitude, penance, and punishment. In Hawthorne’s novel, pregnant and unmarried Hester Prynne faces the crowd from the scaffold. The townspeople and her lover, the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale, demand that she name the father of her baby. She refuses, willingly paying alone the price for a sin committed by two, and begins a life of dignified repentance.

The Comforts of Exile offers many delights, including characters we can root for even as we shake our heads at their mistakes. The novel takes place in the before-times, when cell phones were still a new thing, used occasionally and unreliably, so that our intrepid, but sometimes imprudent, hero Colin must face the consequences of his actions “in propia persona.” He’s got no smart phone to help him escape from reality, though at times he does use the old-fashioned, analog method of daydreaming.
