A NEW PENDANT FROM OUR STAGE STOP GIFT SHOP
Today, July 4, I just completed a new pendant design at my workbench titled INDIAN SUMMER. The mounting and neck ring are sterling silver featuring a rare Singing Sands Jasper center piece with 5 complimentary Turquoise stones from the Sleeping Beauty Mine. Singing Sands Jasper is a rare new find from Utah. One of our previous posts tell of the unusual story of Singing Sands and the Jasper discovery. Jasper and turquoise are rarely seen together in jewelry, but I believe in this case the combination makes a cultural connection. The 5 delicate stones represent the 5 senses, common to ancient cultures who spent their whole lives living under day and nighttime skies.
Visit the STAGE STOP GIFT SHOP to see our one of a kind creations, and let master gem cutters and jewelers Byron and Kandi Muir help you find a gift of distinction.

CHRYSOCOLLA GEMS FROM BEAVER COUNTY COPPER MINES
Back in the 1960s American Mining Company was actively mining copper ore from some newly discovered deposits in the Rocky and Beaver Lake Mining Districts West of Milford. The rich ore consisted of Chalcopyrite, Bornite, and Chalcosite mined along with several oxide copper minerals including Chrysocolla, which is a cousin to turquoise. The old mill crusher feed belt carried an amazing display of spectacular copper minerals on their way to be crushed and sent to the ball mill for grinding and processing into copper concentrate. It was here, along that conveyor belt where specimens of chrysocolla in the attached picture were collected. Very few of these beauties escaped the jaws of the crusher back then and remain a testament of the rare and unusual gemstones found in Beaver County.
In the photo, the four blue colored gems are actually Azurite from the OK Mine. The rest are from the Bawana Mine, and are a mix of blue, green, and black colors. The large stone in the center of the third row is believed to be a combination of chrysocolla and turquoise. It seems much harder than chrysocolla and weighs nearly 40 carats. These and other local gemstones can be seen at THE STAGE STOP GIFT SHOP, where treasures from the earth are always one of a kind. 113 West Main, Minersville, Utah. THE COLORFUL WORLD OF TOURMALINES
Gem tourmalines occur in nearly every color of the rainbow. Numerous trace minerals in the gems formation is responsible for creating a wider range of color than any other gem. There are more than 30 distinct species. First discovered in Brazil during the 1500s, these gemstones make excellent jewelry for everyday wear. Tourmaline is also a birthstone for October.
Some of the popular tourmaline colors are chrome green which looks like emerald, rubelite which is ruby red, indicolites which are blue-green, Parabia which is a brilliant neon blue, and watermelon which is tri-colored. A dense black tourmaline occurs as sprays of long slender needles found in quartz crystal specimes near the Cactus Mine in Western Beaver County, Utah.
Pictured are natural and cut tourmalines from our gemstone collection.

SLEEPING BEAUTY TURQUOISE
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise comes from the Globe -Miami District in Arizona. It got its name from the nearby mountains which resemble a woman lying on her back, sleeping with her arms crossed. The mine was discovered by the Anasazi and Pueblo Indians who fashioned the turquoise into beads and charms. Today, it has become known as one of the most important turquoise deposits in the world. When cut, (see included photos) its natural colors are vibrant baby blue or Robin's egg blue, often rivaling the most sought after Persian turquoise. The turquoise mine eventually developed into a large scale copper mine which produced metal during the 1960s to late 2012. The Sleeping Beauty Turquoise mine played out, and high grade natural material has become scarce.
