📜It has been 172 years since the signing of the last treaty between the Ojibwe and the United States. It has been nearly 35 years to the day since Judge Crabb made a final judgement, which helped to re-establish the hunting, fishing, and gathering rights, which were originally promised to the Ojibwe people in the 1854 Treaty of LaPoint. 📜

Gordon C***s, an Ojibwe/Ottawa artist and resident of Minneapolis created this linoleum hand pulled reduction block print in honor of these historically and politically significant events and to educate the public, especially Minnesotans, about Ojibwe treaty rights. See his artist statement excerpt below:

“My inspiration for this work is to recognize the 150th anniversary of the signing of the last treaty between the Ojibway/Chippewa and the United States. The 1854 Treaty of La Point established our current permanent reservations. The original six villages and six treaties signed by the Ojibway [sic] are also embedded in this flag image. The last entry, May 20, 1991, is the final judgment by Judge Crabb to re-establish the hunting, fishing and gathering rights [also] established in the 1854 Treaty of La Point.” ~Gordon C***s
