What does paternity leave look like as a small business owner?
We welcomed in our son Connor Davis Hurley last Monday. He’s a happy healthy baby, and mama has been an absolute champ. Patrick is loving being an older brother too.
One of the things I love most about being a small business owner is the flexibility I have to be present for my family. From daycare pickups and dropoffs to setting my own boundaries around family time - it’s nice to build a plan where our cherished family time is on our terms.
When you’re heading into the infant stage everyone asks, “What does your maternity and paternity leave look like?”. Typical answers are 12 weeks or up to 6 months. And we’re super fortunate that Keavy’s leave is on the longer end of that spectrum.
But for me it’s more unconventional. I can make space for the baby and for family, but going completely offline for an extended period of time isn’t realistic.
Compared to two years ago when we had Patrick, I’m super fortunate that now I have more help on the Lagoon team to make sure customer issues are handled, orders go out, and we’re still keeping in touch with our athletes and partners while I’m leaning in to help care for Connor.
I love spending time with my family - and I love the business we’re building at Lagoon. Figuring out how to gracefully balance them both is a road I’m super appreciative to walk.
