It was a treat for the Dipper Workshop to bring this important historical Hardanger fiddle by Erik Johnsen Helland c.1861 back to playing condition – adding missing teeth, mother of pearl, cleaning up the varnish and replacing the original pegs where missing. Erik Johnsen Helland (1816-1868) is credited with bringing the hardanger fiddle to modern playing standards in the middle 19th century, and the Helland family became the Stradivari of the Norwegian hardanger fiddle makers.

Andrew Dipper makes his Stradivari pattern bows according to the characteristics of the extant examples. The sticks are longer than usual for the period 1720-40 at 68 to 70 cm and the heads are higher. The heart design of the frog replicates a frog pattern for a Stradivari cello bow, , in the Stradivari relics of Il Museo del Violino in Cremona.
Stradivari bows are made from snakewood and are fine and agile in design dimensions and playability.

Lucky for you, they’re available right now: https://www.givensviolins.com/?s=pointille

Hot off the bench!

Pointillé is the decorative technique of creating embellishing patterns with a series of punched dots. Here, it creates a sweet little heart design that stands out beautifully in silver against the rich frogs of these three bows. The design replicates a frog pattern for a Stradivari cello bow, MS485, in the Stradivari relics of Il Museo del Violino in Cremona.

Stay tuned for their addition to our website!

This beautiful Baroque violin has been fully restored to its original setup and retains its original neck. Other fittings, fingerboard, pegs, and tailpiece are by the Dipper workshop. It was made by the Thompson family, who were key players in the late 18th century musical instrument trade of London, in the popular style of 17th century Tyrolean violin maker Jacob Stainer. His instruments possessed a characteristic tone and carrying power that thrilled the ear and senses of 18th-century audiences.

The Cramer model bow supplanted the Italian model of Tartini, whose design was typified by a rather delicate swan head with a long tip. The Cramer model has a head with a thin palette of wood that extends the back of the tip plate toward the frog, giving it a distinctive ‘battle axe’ profile. The Cramer bow was designed for volume dynamics and percussive attack techniques of large ensembles. It was promoted and in fashion between 1760 and 1785 as players desired access to greater volume, dynamics and percussive attack techniques needed for the music and larger ensembles of the time.
