🌷CLASS OF THE WEEK 🌷

Glass-On-Glass Mosaic Garden Stake

Learn to create a beautiful piece of garden art!

Join us for a beginner friendly four-week class and create a stunning glass-on-glass mosaic panel that captures and transforms sunlight into a vibrant work of garden art. Unlike traditional stained glass, this technique requires no lead came or soldering, making it an approachable and rewarding project for artists of all experience levels.

Throughout this class, you’ll learn every step of the glass-on-glass mosaic process — from designing your composition and cutting glass to layering, adhering, grouting, sealing, and installing your finished panel into a decorative garden stake. We’ll also demonstrate circle-cutting techniques and discuss how to choose and layer translucent glass to create depth, light, and beautiful visual effects when displayed outdoors.

One of the best parts of this project is that nearly any stained glass scraps can be put to use. If you’ve been saving leftover pieces from previous projects, this is the perfect opportunity to transform them into something beautiful.

Over the past months, our team had the opportunity to colaborate with a talented designer to transform an ambitious concept into an enduring work of architectural art, with this breathtaking custom poppy window created for the entry door of a newly constructed home near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis.

Designer approached Potekglass after being commissioned to create a one-of-a-kind stained glass installation for the residence. She had developed a striking composition featuring a single poppy flower rising gracefully across the panel and asked our studio to bring her vision to life in glass.

The process began with close collaboration to refine the original artwork into a design suitable for stained glass construction. From there, we worked together to curate every glass selection, carefully considering color, texture, and opacity to ensure each piece contributed to the depth and luminosity of the finished window.

Once the design and palette were finalized, fabrication began. The finished panel consists of 509 individual pieces of glass, meticulously cut from 38 unique sheets. Among these were two custom sheets created specifically for this project in our studio. One sheet was hand-painted and kiln fired to capture the intricate detail at the center of the poppy blossom, while another was kiln formed to produce the delicate white speckled effect that surrounds the painted elements, adding a subtle effect that could not have been achieved with commercially available glass.

With every piece cut and prepared, our team of skilled glass artisans assembled the window using traditional lead came construction, carefully fitting, leading, and soldering each section together. After glazing, reinforcing rebar was integrated into the panel to ensure its long-term structural integrity.

The final stage of the journey brought us to the construction site, where the finishing touches on the home were coming together. Our team delivered the completed window and assisted with its installation into the custom entry door, allowing the piece to become a permanent architectural centerpiece for the home.
