And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts...

This is an Indonesian Wayang Golek wooden rod puppet, specifically a female character (Putri).

The figure features detailed hand-carved facial features, a painted white face, and a brightly colored, intricate headdress.
It is adorned with an elaborate red costume featuring detailed beadwork and sequins.

These puppets are traditionally used in Javanese theater performances depicting stories of gods and heroes.

Here are Khazana's proprietor, Anju and her beloved friend Ranee Ramaswamy living their best lives at the incredible Santa Fe Folk Art Market. Ranee's reflections on the event were so deep and insightful, we had to post them here below.
If you haven't been fortunate enough to see one of Ragamala's shows, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events. It's always a beautiful opportunity to see an ancient dance form brought into the present day with astonishing artistry and elegance.

A few weeks ago I traveled to Santa Fe with Anju Kataria (owner of Khazana Gallery) for the International Folk Art Market. Artists from around the world were celebrated for carrying generations of tradition while continuing to evolve in the present.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with our dear collaborator, visual artist Anil Vangad, who created extraordinary Warli paintings for one of our signature works, Sacred Earth. It was a joy to watch people discover how two ancient art forms can come together to create something entirely new. Master artists spoke about technique, the importance of balancing strength with gentleness in their hands, the artistic lineages they inherited, and the responsibility of preserving ancestral knowledge while continuing to innovate.
As I listened, I couldn't help but think about our own creative journey at Ragamala. An evening-length work takes us nearly four years to create. It begins with a question or a poem, unfolds through music and choreography, is shaped through countless hours of rehearsal with our dancers and musicians, and finally comes together through collaborations with lighting, scenic, and visual designers before it is ready to perform. Like the artists I met in Santa Fe, our work is built through patience, devotion, and knowledge carried across generations. I returned home with a renewed sense of gratitude—for the artists who dedicate their lives to their craft, for the communities that sustain these traditions, and for our supporters who make it possible for this work to continue.

A Gamsha is the traditional unstiched hand woven cotton cloth that is used universally in India by the working class. 

  The name, Gamsha comes from the words for "body" and "to wipe" which conveys a sense of its most basic functionality for hard working people in the tropical heat.   But the ubiquitous cloth is also routinely adapted to a wide range of other purposes, from head covering to floor mats to sacred offerings and gifts of hospitality.

  In recent years, this humble centuries old cloth has caught the attention of elite designers and has made its way to the runways. It's elegant characteristic striped and checked motifs and cool cotton composition have revealed themselves to be as fashionable as they are functional

The Santa Fe Folk Art Market brings the world together and unites it in a communal feeling of joy. This year was another triumph of art, friendship and sharing with artists and enthusiasts from all over the world. A beautiful coming together of creative and passionate people, and an inspiration that will last the year long.

The lyrical line and sinuous shape of traditional Odisha Pattachitra paintings is perfect for their original use as illustrative material during storytelling and the singing if songs.

Pattachitra paintings are done on a surface that has been prepared by layering cloth, tamarind paste and chalk and then polished by stone. They are painted in all natural colors with astonishing detail.

Typically depicting stories from Hindu folklore and tales from the life of Krishna, Pattachitra paintings are meditations on detail, ornament. and gesture, beautiful songs in pictorial form.

We love the centering and grounding power of sound. Singing bowls are an ancient tool for focusing the mind and filling your body with good vibrations. Enhanced concentration begins with learning the technique of sustained pressure that causes them to ring.

What is independence? What is liberty? What is freedom?

On the surface it is the choice to do what we want. But it is also the responsibility to care about the freedom of others.
True freedom can't exist unless we strike a balance. Freedom for an individual can only extend as far as it doesn't limit the freedom of others.

On this independence day, we are thinking about what freedom represents for America but also to the world as a whole.

We are a work in progress. This weekend we celebrate the ongoing work to balance the freedoms of all!
