On a rainy day nothing warms you up like a steamy warm cup of tea.  

 Coming originally from India, the drink traditionally known as chai is offered as a welcome, expression of friendship and as a center people gather around. 

 Over the centuries chai -or tea- has flowed out from it's source in India and encircled the globe with its dark and flavorful embrace.

Himroo: tradition and elegance...

Himroo is a historic, luxurious handwoven fabric from Aurangabad, India, made by blending cotton and silk. Derived from the Persian word hum-ruh (meaning "similar"), it was created in the 14th century as an affordable alternative to kimkhab, a royal brocade woven with pure gold and silver threads.

Beautiful homespun Khadi, the cloth of the people of India.

Textiles are woven stories. Made by hand from beginning to end, they bring together the skills, traditions and cultures of artisanal communities from across India. Each artisan adds to this story and we are honored to be their story tellers.

Bidri art is a 600-year-old metal handicraft from Bidar, India.  It features striking bright silver inlay set against a deep, matte-black metal background.

The base metal, a zinc and copper alloy, is engraved and then silver, or sometimes gold, is hammered into the engravings creating sharply detailed shining patterns.

The distinctive effect of bidri can only be achieved by dipping the base alloy into a solution made from the soil surrounding the Bidar Fort in Karnataka, which contains a unique chemical composition that has baffled scientists for decades.

In modern times, bidri has been the inspiration for many other art and craft forms. It's patterns were foundational for the design style Art Deco, and its sharp contrast of matte and shine has been adapted to a myriad used in fashion, from sarees to bags to shoes.

Hands that Weave Stories

Happy handloom day!
..to all those who celebrate.

Today we are featuring our incredible friend, Padma Shri Gajam Govardhana, a master weaver who led the modern revival of the telia rumal style of double ikat weaving.

Telia rumal is known for its bright red white and black colors and its incredibly precise geometric patterns. The threads that make up this beautiful cloth are dyed according to strict mathematical divisions before it is woven. When it comes together, intricate shapes emerge.

Mr. Gajam is a textile artist and innovator who in addition to producing the finest classical telia rumal weaves, has adapted the square rumal patterns to a broad range contemporary applicattions.

It was such a joy to meet him and to have some exquisite examples of his work at Khazana.

Dive into the glorious patterns of ajrakh, the ancient craft of creating all natural hand dyed and block printed textiles from Kachchh, gujarat in India.

Our friends Dr. Ismail Mohammed Khatri and his son, Sufiyan Ismail Khatri are recognized the world over as masters of the craft. They have taught us so much about the art and about being an artist through our visits with them, and we are fortunate to have some fine examples of their work at Khazana.

Lippan Kaam is a traditional mud-and-mirror mural art originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat. 

 Traditionally, artisans from rural communities like the Rabari, Mutwa, and Meghwali use local clay and tiny reflective mirrors called aabhla to create geometric or nature-inspired relief patterns on interior and exterior walls of their homes and buildings.

In recent years, the technique has been adapted to adorn furniture and decorative objects as well, bringing the art down off the walls and sharing it with the wider world.

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts...

This is an Indonesian Wayang Golek wooden rod puppet, specifically a female character (Putri).

The figure features detailed hand-carved facial features, a painted white face, and a brightly colored, intricate headdress.
It is adorned with an elaborate red costume featuring detailed beadwork and sequins.

These puppets are traditionally used in Javanese theater performances depicting stories of gods and heroes.

Here are Khazana's proprietor, Anju and her beloved friend Ranee Ramaswamy living their best lives at the incredible Santa Fe Folk Art Market. Ranee's reflections on the event were so deep and insightful, we had to post them here below.
If you haven't been fortunate enough to see one of Ragamala's shows, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events. It's always a beautiful opportunity to see an ancient dance form brought into the present day with astonishing artistry and elegance.

A few weeks ago I traveled to Santa Fe with Anju Kataria (owner of Khazana Gallery) for the International Folk Art Market. Artists from around the world were celebrated for carrying generations of tradition while continuing to evolve in the present.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with our dear collaborator, visual artist Anil Vangad, who created extraordinary Warli paintings for one of our signature works, Sacred Earth. It was a joy to watch people discover how two ancient art forms can come together to create something entirely new. Master artists spoke about technique, the importance of balancing strength with gentleness in their hands, the artistic lineages they inherited, and the responsibility of preserving ancestral knowledge while continuing to innovate.
As I listened, I couldn't help but think about our own creative journey at Ragamala. An evening-length work takes us nearly four years to create. It begins with a question or a poem, unfolds through music and choreography, is shaped through countless hours of rehearsal with our dancers and musicians, and finally comes together through collaborations with lighting, scenic, and visual designers before it is ready to perform. Like the artists I met in Santa Fe, our work is built through patience, devotion, and knowledge carried across generations. I returned home with a renewed sense of gratitude—for the artists who dedicate their lives to their craft, for the communities that sustain these traditions, and for our supporters who make it possible for this work to continue.
