It’s the grand finale of this year’s Virtual Garden Tour, and we’re ending with a showstopper.

Tonight, we’re heading to Edina with Tangletown Gardens co-founder Dean Engelmann to explore an iconic garden you may recognize. It’s recently been featured in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and several other notable publications, and it’s easy to see why.

Part Mediterranean retreat, part Japanese garden, part Pacific Northwest oasis, it’s a remarkable fusion of influences that somehow feels completely at home in Minnesota.

Layers upon layers of exceptional tree and shrub specimens grown on our regenerative farm give this garden its depth and character, and it’s a masterclass in the power of green on green on green. Rather than relying on flowers for impact, Dean plays with countless shades of green, contrasting foliage, sculptural forms, beautiful bark, and unexpected textures. Everywhere you look, there’s another specimen to discover and another layer revealing itself.

It’s about as close to perfection as you can get, but more than anything, Dean hopes it inspires you to dream big. This garden is proof that a small space doesn’t have to mean small ideas. There are endless possibilities when you’re willing to experiment, think beyond the ordinary, and imagine what your outdoor space could become.

Next on the tour, we’re heading to St. Louis Park with landscape designer Mindy for an eclectic backyard that’s packed with personality.

This garden is filled with exceptional tree specimens that bring form and structure to the space, showing just how much impact a thoughtfully chosen tree can have, especially in a smaller garden. Layers of flowers and foliage fill in around them with color and texture, making every corner feel like its own discovery.

Mindy has always loved plants and flowers, and that passion comes through in the way she approaches a garden: with curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to keep experimenting.

She’s worked with this client for several years, refreshing a spot here, moving a plant there, and reimagining different areas as the garden grows and changes. It’s another reminder that the best gardens are rarely “finished.” They’re a constant evolution.

Mindy’s advice? Don’t feel like you have to tackle the whole yard at once. Pick one small area, give it your attention, and build from there. Over time, all those little moments can grow into something pretty extraordinary.

We’re mixing it up tonight with a trip across the river to landscape designer Matt’s personal garden in Stockholm, Wisconsin.

It’s a different canvas from the city lots Matt designs day to day in the Twin Cities. Here, there’s room to spread out, settle into a different rhythm, and let Mother Nature take more of the lead. A garden on this scale is a lot to tend, and part of the practice is accepting that it will always be a work in progress.

Matt is an industry veteran and former teacher of landscape design, and his own garden speaks to a common misconception: that once a garden is planted, it’s somehow permanent. In reality, nothing in a garden is static. Plants grow, wander, compete, seed themselves and sometimes disappear altogether. Light shifts as trees mature. Conditions change. What thrives in one season may ask for something different in the next.

Rather than trying to hold the landscape in one perfect moment, Matt works with that constant evolution, observing what nature does beautifully on its own and responding along the way. It’s a garden shaped by experience, but also by a willingness to loosen the reins and accept that a garden is really never finished.

It’s also a reflection of the life Matt and his husband, Dan, have created outside the city. Their joyful zinnia and dahlia garden means visitors rarely leave without a handpicked bouquet, while pumpkins from their patch are sold in their farm stand to raise money for Christmas gifts and celebrations for children in need in Mexico.

At the end of the day, Matt hopes his work leaves the world, and his clients’ lives, a little better and a little more beautiful.

Next on our Virtual Garden Tour, we’re heading to Edina with landscape designer Juli for a look at a backyard hangout designed for a young family.

Contrary to last night’s established garden, this one is fresh out of the ground. There’s an old bit of garden wisdom that says the first year perennials sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap. If year one is any indication of this garden’s trajectory, it’s going to be pretty spectacular by year three.

Juli brings more than 40 years of experience to her work, and it shows in the details you might never notice. She’s a master of hardscapes and the careful planning behind them, from grading and drainage to leveling and the angles that connect each space to the next.

Here, all of that groundwork creates an easy, welcoming backyard built for gathering, playing, and growing right alongside this young family. We can’t wait to see how the garden fills in from here.

Tonight on the tour, we’re stepping into a shady backyard oasis in South Minneapolis with designer and landscape facilitator Amy.

This small, approachable garden is a lesson in just how much texture, depth, and interest can be created in the shade. Layers of foliage do much of the work here, turning a modest backyard into a quiet sanctuary that feels lush, intimate, and serene.

These clients have worked with Amy and our Creative Services team for several years, thoughtfully curating the garden over time. It’s a beautiful reminder that the best gardens aren’t planted all at once. They evolve through patience, observation, and a strong relationship between client and designer.

If you remember Amy’s own garden from last year’s tour, you’ll recognize her love of abundance and layered planting, but expressed here in an entirely different way. Where her personal garden leans cottagey, bold, and colorful, this space is quieter and more restrained. It’s a glimpse into the versatility of a landscape designer: listening to the client, responding to the space, and bringing a completely unique vision to life.

Announcing the return of our Virtual Garden Tour! 🌿 Each evening this week at 6 PM, we’ll take you inside an exceptional Tangletown-designed landscape, sharing the ideas, plants, and inspiration behind each one.

We’re starting right here on our corner of 54th & Nicollet, where co-founder Scott Endres takes us through the gardens surrounding Tangletown Gardens and Wise Acre Eatery before hopping over to a few other inspiring, public-facing landscapes we’ve had a hand in creating.

There’s something powerful about planting a garden that extends beyond your own experience. The gardens we share with the street become a gift to our neighbors and community, offering a little beauty, inspiration, and connection to anyone who passes by. A little medicine we could all use more of in the world.
