A message regarding Loring Elementary……
We are extremely concerned about the changes MPS has proposed. Our concerns are multi-level: the kids first and foremost, the added stress these changes could place on families, and the long-term sustainability of Dancing Bear.
Our primary concern is the impact these changes could have on children and families. The potential impact on DBC is certainly something we have to consider as small-business owners, but it is only one part of a much bigger conversation.
At the same time, we are very conscious that our concerns not be seen as self-serving. It is never our intention to place DBC ahead of the needs of our community or our neighbors. We believe our business is part of this community, not separate from it, and we want to make sure our voice reflects that.
We also have some longer-term concerns and questions if MPS ultimately decides to vacate Loring. What happens to the Building? How long might it sit idle? What does that mean for the surrounding neighborhood? And ultimately, what does it mean for the future of small businesses in our community? What are the potential reuses for the building?
Adding another building to the growing list of vacant properties would have an impact far beyond the building itself. It affects the vitality of the neighborhood and the businesses, families and organizations that call it home.
We love our little corner of Minneapolis. We always have, and we always will. But we are also realistic about what is happening around us, and we feel a responsibility to think beyond simply what happens to Dancing Bear.
The bottom line, it’s about the kids, the families, our neighbors, our neighborhood, and the future of the community we have chosen to build our lives and our business in.
