Out and About This Summer! 🚐🎶
School was out, but our vans were still on the road! Here's where you could find the Eckroth Music team this summer:

📍 North Dakota — School Service Summit: two days packed with ideas to better support music educators and their students
📍 Montana — New Music Reading Workshop: educators from across the state joined clinician Michael Pote to read through new music for their bands
📍 Minnesota — Total Band Director Workshop: our two-day intensive brought top clinicians together with educators from around the upper Midwest
📍 Wisconsin — Supporting summer programs that gave kids hands-on instrument experiences right in their communities

From workshops to instrument petting zoos, this summer set the stage for an incredible school year. Here's to a great start this fall!

🎵 Getting Started in Band & Orchestra: What to Expect 🎵
Learning a new instrument is such an exciting adventure, and it can feel like a lot to take in at first! That's totally normal, and we've got your family covered every step of the way.

Here's what the first few weeks look like:
✅ Pick up your instrument and accessories (or have it delivered to your school)
✅ Learn to assemble & care for your instrument
✅ Make those first sounds!

Every musician starts exactly where your child is right now. With a little patience (and the right support), those first squeaks turn into songs before you know it!

This week, challenge yourself to listen to and play a style of music that's new to you!
🥁 Marches
🎷 Jazz
🎸 Rock
🎻 Folk
🎹 Movie Soundtracks

Listen to some examples and think about what you hear: What do you notice about the rhythm? What makes this style unique? How can you imitate those sounds on your instrument?

Exploring different styles helps you become a more versatile musician and can introduce you to music you never knew you'd love. There’s a whole world of music out there, so go discover something new! ✨

🎶☀️ Summer Music Week 7: Learn a Song by Ear ☀️🎶

We spend a lot of time reading music in band and orchestra, but some of the best music-making happens when we simply listen!

Choose a favorite song and see if you can learn part of it just by listening and experimenting on your instrument:
🎵 Start with a simple melody.
🎵 Listen carefully and try to match the pitches.
🎵 Don't worry about getting it perfect right away!

Learning music by ear is a great way to strengthen your listening skills, improve intonation, and build the confidence to recognize and correct mistakes on your own.

Grab a friend or two and make music together this week!

🎼 Quiz each other on scales.
🎶 Perform something you've been working on independently.
🎺 Sightread a duet or trio and see where the music takes you!

Practicing with others can help keep you motivated, build confidence, and make challenging skills feel a little easier. Plus, it's a great reminder that music is all about connection and collaboration. ✨
