We could tell you ceramic keeps light out and helps olive oil stay fresher, longer. That’s absolutely true… but it’s not the real reason we think a hand-thrown ceramic vessel makes a difference in your home.

We’ve been trying to solve the same problem for over a year: is there a way to run your dishwasher completely plastic-free without giving up performance or convenience?

We started with the pods that are still our best-seller today. They came highly recommended, and they work insanely well, we sell over 2,000/month! But they’re made with a PVA casing, a water-soluble film that dissolves in the wash, and some customers didn’t want that. So we kept testing and looking for a plastic-free alternative.

That’s how Dirty Labs’ 2-in-1 powder ($22) ended up on our shelf. It’s plastic-free in the truest sense, since it’s loose powder with no dissolvable film to debate, built on nontoxic biobased enzyme technology instead of harsh chemicals. It’s still here and it works, but even we reach for our usual pods more often, since measuring powder every time is a little more friction than popping in a pod.

So we brought in a small trial batch of a new dishwasher tab (55 cents each) that just arrived. It has zero synthetic film but keeps the pre-measured, no-mess format we, and probably you, actually prefer day to day. It’s not quite as strong on Missoula’s hard water as our usual pods, but it’s the closest we’ve found yet to plastic-free without the trade-off of effectiveness.

Meet the woman behind Dear Mother: my mom, Denise.

she was in town this week, so I sat her down for a quick Q&A while she worked on some of her felt play food. This collection has been so much more well received in the shop than we ever expected, and I’m endlessly grateful you all love what she’s making as much as we do. We are in constant awe of her artistry and creativity, and can’t wait for the collection to continue to expand and grow!

Restocked: organic cotton towels, back in three collections.

Wildflower in mauve taupe (hand towel $28) and a soft undyed cream (bath towel $68), Quick-Drying in Sky and Sage ($68 bath sheet, $48 compact), and our NEW Cloud in undyed cotton ($78). These fringed edges and patterned weave are the kind of texture that gets better with every wash instead of breaking down.

7 AM
My home is not magazine worthy. But it’s honest and everything in it gets used, so here’s a Sunday, start to finish. Lemon water before coffee, pressed with the citrus press, before I let myself have caffeine.

9 AM BREAKFAST
Toast on our outdoor teak table, now doing time in the dining room since Three Bales stole our real one. Bread girl, through and through, crumb brush in hand for the tablecloth we need now.

AFTERNOON, LAUNDRY DAY
We are always swimming in laundry… so many loads. This refill bottle holds about a month of concentrated laundry soap, and being stainless steel means it doesn’t break when it inevitably gets knocked off the shelf.

DRESSER JOY
Putting laundry away, I stop to look at this ceramic bird my daughter made at Clay camp. Its name is Pebbles. Small vignettes of joy like this one is how I keep from feeling the chaos of all the piles and chores.

6 PM DINNER
Evan does most of the cooking these days, but we’re still in the kitchen together most nights. Barbecue chicken and stainless steel tongs from Japan, the ones that will be the best pair you’ll ever own.

DINNER, still
Roasted potatoes from our CSA share on one of our stainless steel baking sheets we use them for everything: brownies, sheet cakes, meat seasoning prep trays. The weight and quality of this baking sheet makes it feel like it will outlast me.

8 PM BEFORE BED
Dishes go in the dishwasher after dinner, but we don’t start it until the very end of the night. Our water pressure can’t handle a shower and the dishwasher running at once. Last thing before bed: a tab in, then I am off to bed.

10 PM
A Sasawashi cloth to wash my face is something I’ve done for years. None of this is on display. All of it is in use.
