🪽Usually the “Roots & Wings” name speaks to me as the phrase “remember your roots and trust your wings,” but this morning at 6 am, nature spoke to me quite literally!!! 🌼 🐦

Although we have ground irrigation for our acres of flowers, I’ve been showering the buds with a sprinkler early in the morning… and today the birds were LOVING IT! 🩵💛 Flying in and out of the sprinkles like kids in the park! From the trees to the fence posts, and back and forth from the barn to the railroad ties edging our farm.

The wings surely fluttered today at Roots & Wings Wildflower Farm! 🪽🪽

Home is where the heart is! 💙

Living in Mitchell, SD for the past 6 years has been a season of my life where I have strived to follow my heart (even when it’s been the path less taken)… and what I have found, is that I’m finding myself returing “home” to my roots 🌳

I was lucky enough to be raised by two loving parents and protective and kind big brothers. We lived on century farm on a gravel road with a LONG gravel lane that we would walk down to catch the school bus 🚌 (we were first to be picked up and last to be dropped off!). When not in school; I rode horses, took care of the barn cats, and made violet and dandelion bouquets for my mom 💐. My dad took great pride in cutting the grass during the summer months when he wasn’t planting or harvesting in the field 🚜. It was a simple life!

I took this photo over the weekend, and if you look closely, you’ll see Ryan Anderson cutting the grass in the front yard. Something about the gravel lane and the scenery with Lake Mitchell in the background of this photo made it feel so nostalgic! 🥹✨🌼

So. What does this have to do with Roots & Wings Wildflower Farm? …Well our new FARM TRUCK of course…! I have had my eye on this truck since the day I saw it! The patina paint, square body frame, and original interior fit the classic nostalgic vibe of our farm and my mission to remember your roots and trust your wings. For me, it’s a reminder of home 💙(I miss you everyday, Dad 🥹). Mitchell SD, is where my heart has led me on this path of life. This community is where I’m planting my roots. I’ve just had to trust my wings 🪽… which I’m still learning to do as life unfolds...

Many things are blossoming for us 🌸 stay tuned for more updates… 🌸🌸🌸

From the moment we set foot on our property, one of the many reasons Ryan and I fell in love with this acreage, was the scenery. From our balcony, we can see the Mitchell, SD train tracks and watch the trains slowly go by. 🚂 We can usually feel the rumble before we see any engine!

🌸 My roots began on Rural Route 2, in Woodward, IA. Railroad tracks ran behind the 20 acre farm where my family lived, and my cousins and I would often play “Boxcar Children,” imagining ourselves living in a train car. Many years ago, I heard they turned the tracks into a bike path, and now those same tracks are one of the most famous bike trails in the mid-west. 🛤️ The is just 1 mile from my childhood backyard.🪽

Hi everyone! Some of you may know me as
Lady J. (J is for Jill, the name meaning youthful spirit). I recently embarked on a journey with the support of my family and friends, and decided to remember my roots and trust my wings. My roots began as a pony riding farm girl en arranging flowers to compete for the county fair blue ribbon • I graduated from a rural high school and attended floriculture academy before becoming a florist and managing a flower shoppe Now, many years later, I'm here with you today to share my new adventure come spring...The Roots & Wings Wildflower Farm in Mitchell, South Dakota. Owning a flower shop had been my life long dream, but when I was asked to follow my heart, I came to realize my heart was at home with Ryan and the
kids. So instead, we are bringing the flowers HOME by growing them from the roots up, right here on our charming rustic acreage. My vision is to share my passion of flowers with family, friends, the community, and everyone who enjoys a story of love, hope, and faith. I want to inspire anyone who dares to believe that
their roots are deep and strong enough that they can grow into something beautiful. I imagine my garden will be a place where creativity blooms and spirits soar!
My family and I are excited to share our journey with you as we get our hands dirty, our hearts happy, and our spirits soaring- as we remember our roots, and trust our wings.
