**Please note** that until Covid-19 cases have significantly lowered in our community, our programs are reduced for the safety of our volunteers. Appointments for bicycle repair can be made through our page by any community member, and we will work with community members that need low cost or free access to bicycle transportation. The Delta Bike Project is a volunteer led, non-profit comm

unity bicycle shop dedicated to improving access to bicycle transportation in Mobile, Alabama. We minimize barriers by providing access to tools and do-it-yourself bicycle repair during open shop hours and low cost or free access to recycled bicycles. The Delta Bike Project believes that our community is made healthier through the increase of people using bicycles for environmental, social and practical purposes. They believe that cycling and its benefits should be made equally accessible to all people, so their programs are open to all members of our community, regardless of financial status. The Delta Bike Project sees the value cycling has for our developing community, and we acknowledge that as our culture and infrastructure become more inclusive of bicycles, quality of life is enhanced for all. There are two key community initiatives at the Delta Bike Project is the (1) Open Shop Hours and (2) the Time is Money Program. During open shop hours, volunteer mechanics help community members learn basic repairs on their bikes. From learning how to change a flat tire to adjusting brake and gears, visitors can learns a new skill while getting the repair assistance they need. Recycled bicycles are also available for donations to allow people to gain access to low cost bicycle transportation. The Time is Money Program helps provide a bicycle or bicycle parts through volunteering and “sweat equity.” To date, we have recycled over 800 bicycles into the Mobile community through this program. This 5-Hour program is reserved for Mobile’s community in need, and is available on a first come/first served bases and limited to the number of available bike donations on hand each Sunday. Participants first meet with staff to determine their bicycle needs. They receive $10 worth of “bike credit” towards their bike goal for every hour they work, meaning that they ride away with the bike that same day (each used bike has ~$50 value). Occasionally, bike parts are needed and participants can work towards those goals as well. Types of volunteer work include cleaning our neighborhood of trash, cleaning the shop and bikes, removing parts from bikes, sorting parts, etc. You do not need any prior knowledge of bikes maintenance to participate in this program.

An update on 2021 Gears and Beers:

Dear Faithful Riders and Delta Bike Project Supporters, it is with a heavy heart that we again announce the cancellation of Gears and Beers. We have been closely monitoring the situation, as well as being in contact with medical professionals. The situation with Covid-19 is alarming and frightening in our area and many others around the southeast. The situation in our hospitals and in our medical community is dire, and we stand with them in not being a contributor to the larger Covid-19 problem. We again feel strongly that canceling our event the right course of action. As we stated last year, we pride ourselves on hosting the highest quality cycling experience, and we prioritize our guests and volunteers safety and health above anything else. We are not able to ensure that safety that due to these unprecedented times in our communities. Putting on Gears and Beers is a long process of careful planning and fundraising for our small non-profit, the Delta Bike Project, and our core group of dedicated volunteers. It’s been a very hard year for us, and we know it has been for you, too. We have focused on continuing to provide bike repair to support to our Mobile community, and have seen over 500 clients with careful safety protocols. We hope and pray that you stay well and safe. We will miss all of your smiling faces at 5:30am, and seeing you return triumphant from your ride for a big party. Please consider getting vaccinated, if you haven’t already, so we can collectively return to fun (and crowded) events and gathering safely as a bike community. If you’d like to make a contribution to support our volunteer-led organization in lieu of participating in our major fundraiser, we would love your consideration: https://www.deltabikeproject.org/support/

With peace and love,
The Gears and DBP Team

Today is ! Please consider a donation of any amount to support our program! Our goal today is to raise *$1000* to replenish our basic parts, supplies and tools to support community bicycle repair (tubes, chains, cables, housing, brake pads, cleaning supplies. Despite Covid-19 challenges, we are still fixing bicycles by appointment in order to keep our volunteers and clients as safe as possible! Since April, our volunteers have taken more than 150 appointments to help community members (adults and kids) with basic bicycle repair, provided countless refurbished kid's bikes to families in need, and provided low cost bike sales to reduce the barriers to obtaining bicycle transportation. Thank you for considering us!

Thank you for your continued donations during this difficult time! These young men were in need of bicycles, and we were able to outfit all four with the correct size bicycles (and helmets). They were so pleased with their “new” rides. **Please note that we will continue our appointment only system until further notice due to COVID-19. This helps us keep our volunteers and clients as safe as possible and reduce crowds at the shop. Send a message to this page to request an appointment!**

Update on Gears and Beers 2020...

Dear Faithful Riders and Delta Bike Project Supporters -

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of Gears and Beers 2020. With the rising COVID-19 infection rates in Mobile, and the areas and states surrounding us, we feel strongly that its the right course of action. We pride ourselves on hosting the highest quality cycling experience, and we prioritize your safety and health. This year, we are not able to provide that due to these unprecedented times in our communities. Putting on Gears and Beers is a year long process of careful planning and fundraising for our small non-profit, Delta Bike Project, and our core group of dedicated volunteers. Our goal is to come back in 2021 stronger and better than we have ever been for our 7th year. We hope and pray that you stay well and safe, and come back to ride with us next year. We will miss all of your smiling faces at 5:30am, and seeing you return triumphant from your ride for a big party.

Until next year,
Jenn Greene and our Gears Team
