Did you know over 4,000 unique titles were challenged in 2025?

Almost 40% of those were representative of the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and people of color.

92% of all book challenges were initiated by pressure groups, government officials and decision makers (source: ALA.org).

How can you help? The American Library Association (ALA) has a national campaign to empower readers against censorship; you can sign up on their website. You can also report censorship when you see it to ALAs Office for Intellectual Freedom.

If you have a little free library in your neighborhood, try to stock it with diverse and challenged books. Check out challenged and banned books from your local library so they keep circulating. Share them with your friends, your family. And keep reading.

Next month! Join us at Black Cat Fables for an evening of feminist horror with two local authors 💚✨

Lauren Lee Smith is the debut author of The Night Pool, a gripping tale of sisterhood, vengeance and survival. Lauren will be in conversation with Linda Hamilton, author of The Fourth Wife, a historical gothic horror about a young Morman woman.

These very talented women will share about their books and their connections to feminist history with time for a Q&A and signing.

It’s time for October events! 🧡✨

We’ve got a packed month of workshops, social clubs, and city events!

We’re welcoming back Tarot with Nikki and Danielle of Ayla Healing for a relaxing sound bath 🔮

We’ll have a bookmark craft for the city’s Old Town Monrovia Fall Festival and we’ll be handing out candy on Halloween! 🍫

We’re hosting local author Nick Wright for a special spooky story time for all ages. For grown-ups we’re bringing back Erik Patterson for a horror writing workshop 👻

Newsletter subscribers got early access to our witch hat workshop but there’s *one* spot left so get it before it’s gone! 🧙🏽‍♀️

Thank you so much to everyone who came out for our events this month! 💖

We learned how to hand-sew with Amanda Edwards and we made candles with Create. Meow. Repeat. LLC | cruelty-free coconut wax candles. We had a lovely story time with local author Stephanie Cox and a fun presentation on the Aztec hotel with 𝔏𝔢𝔵𝔦 𝔑𝔬𝔠𝔱𝔲𝔯𝔫𝔞. Everyone continues to amaze us with their creativity at Drink n’ Doodle with Miranda Draws Stuff and we were sold out again for Sip n’ Scrap!

Lots more fun coming up in October; stay tuned, kittens 💜🐈‍⬛
