Here’s a little throwback to 25 years ago… the Merc wasn’t born yet, but these walls paved the way for several businesses before us- some have moved into bigger spaces, others moved on.
I love that gingerbread porch… it’s a great reminder that with intention and attention, the things we love like this building from the 1880s will be there for us down the road. The same goes with small business. Things are tough for everyone right now, but our downtown businesses need your love and attention more than ever- please don’t let them be an afterthought.

And don’t worry, the gingerbread is still in my barn waiting for me to free up time so the hubby and I can restore the good, rebuild the rotten, and finish it along with the rest of the building. It’s only time, energy and money, after all… 🤷‍♀️

I know it sounds cliche, but this is your friendly reminder to stop and smell the flowers…
The emotions have hit hard lately.
My mother-in-law’s birthday was yesterday. She passed away in early 2025 and to this day, I still miss her terribly. She broke the mold of the classic MIL standard. Always positive when I needed someone to listen. Always pushing me to fight harder for myself when life got overwhelmingly difficult. Always wanting the best for everyone in her world, for them to be happy and to get along. Always forgiving, always honest. She fiercely loved and was proud of her children, her grandchildren, and the hundreds of students she taught over the years, beyond what anyone could have realized or imagined. She was my fellow foodie that was always down for a picnic on her porch with slice of pie from Pies by Inge, or soup from the Brown Bag.
She loved the smell of flowers, her favorite being the lilac tree that my husband planted for her in her yard. When it was in bloom and the wind would blow just right, we would sit on the porch (which we joked was the official “neighborhood watch” post) so she could smell the flowers in the breeze. I would always bring her yellow roses for her birthday, or a random bouquet when I had the opportunity to pick one up to brighten her day.
While I was working outside yesterday, the wind happened to catch the fragrance of my peonies, and I remembered. I remembered that life is hard, but you can love harder. I remembered that someone else isn’t responsible for your happiness. And I remembered that a piece of pie can make almost anything better… for the time being, anyway…
Thanks for that gentle nudge that you’re still with us, G’ma B… 💛
