SOMERSET - Local fisherman Darrell Buckley, 42, made waves last night when he reeled in a record-breaking 97-pound catfish from Lake Cumberland. Buckley described the battle as a “20-minute tug-of-war with jaws of steel.”
The fish, nicknamed “Goliath,” put up such a fierce fight that Buckley’s boat nearly capsized. “I thought I was hauling in a small boat,” Buckley said, still panting from the exertion. "I got quite a workout, that's for sure."
Local authorities are investigating whether the catfish was secretly training for the next fishing competition or had aspirations of its own. “It was like wrestling a freight train with fins,” Buckley added.
The catfish’s enormous size has already prompted rumors of it being a long-lost lake monster, though Buckley insists it was just an exceptionally well-fed fish with a serious attitude problem.
This is a developing story.
