The Shanty Shop

The Shanty Shop I am NOT a brick & morter shop, offering on line sales at times. Shifting gears as life changes, downsizing & concentrating on necessity.

I may offer creations from time to time, but gardening, preserving & clearing is where life's at currently. The Shanty Shop was started as a way to "clean out" while helping a big move. Had the opertunity to meet some very interesting & exciting people through our sales, and haven't stopped. Our Roots:
Well I've been in business for myself since the late 80's. Evolving from Merchandising, Photogra

phy, Income Tax preperation, Landscaping, working at 2 -3 at a time just to make ends meet. When I took a sabaticle to help move & clean out an old building...(Hence The Shanty) Kinda fell into this field where I've stayed since. I've always loved this old stuff. As a child frequented the "swap shops" with Dad, & garage sales with mom. Auctions with uncles... on occation. So I guess it was a "calling" in a way. I don't have a brick & morter due to costs for occupancy permitting & costs...So the Virtual (on line) world is perfect for me.

Good morning!
Where's all the gardener's?
I've been experimenting lately...
Wondering if anyone saves spots in their garden for those succession plantings?

The past couple of yrs, I've realized planting as if I had raised beds has Condensed my space a bit. So where I had walking paths between each row, now I have 3 rows mostly between each walking path.
Yes, toss the old and adapt plant what you can easily reach makes less path and more grow!

Spinich only grows in cool weather, so an early start or late fall planting space is all that's needed. I changed those short root plantings into raised beds. So I'm re-planning.
Tomatoes will always be ground plants because they climb taller than me. Easy to pick with breaking my back and hips.

So here's where the planning gets a bit time consuming.
What minerals do spinich require and what can I plant to either replenish or at min not use the same in those summer months? And, biggest question, what will grow in the space in the direct sun and heat?
Cucumber is another, spring and fall, but timing in the fall is imperative.

Beets will grow all yr.
Lettuce will grow all year.
Carrots will grow all yr.
These all need to be done in succession as well to keep producing.

But...
I need to test beans in the raised beds because they really are a pain in my back n hips to pick come harvest season.

I had too many beans last yr. So I've reduced to 6 rows. I do not have 6 rows worth of raised bed space. I have 2.

My thoughts are going to starting my tomatoes, peppers and Cucumber inside in March? Mayb not till April, but peppers need to be started in March as they grow so slow inside.

Cucumber can go out in one bed and drop down instead of sprawling up or out. (I've done it and it works great) when they are done, add the Carrots? We don't use alot.

Spinich in the remaining beds and start the all summer growth plants after the spinich is started to bolt? But I want Lettuce as soon as possible as well as beets?

String beans after the spinich and Cucumber shrivel? Or try Cucumber between tomatoes to shade them. I've also tried that with good results but they still succumb to the heat and bugs.

What's your planting schedule look like?
Do you save space by keeping it covered to prevent weeds until your ready to plant the next succession?

Anyone else?
I made venison pastrami!
First taste I thought it was still too salty even after the 24 hr soak in the fridge. Maybe 2 soaks for those of us with hypertension?
Once I sliced it thin it was very good!
So maybe it was just the outside piece too?
If I had another roast I'd do it again. I likely would try another recipe too tho, until I find "the one".
I never considered myself a "homesteader". I guess maybe because we aren't "off grid" or sell anything?
But really what is homesteading?

I'm also making my own tinctures, salves, and whatever herbal strikes me at the time.
I never believed chiropractor or acupuncture was "real" either, until I contracted lyme disease and had so many issues I broke and tried it all for some relief.
It has all worked for me! So hey why not herbal supplements too?

Oh and foraging? The ramps!! I'm not much into garlic and onion (they bother my guts), but for some reason the ramps didn't. I could eat that fresh and had no issues. Plus I liked the bit of sweet just before the bite.

The garden? This yr is questionable so far...
Pics n post to come...

Out foraging the other day and what a score!
Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, I have plans for the roots, they are on my property in droves, so I'd never be able to dwindle them down to nothing. (Unless some act of nature takes them)

I've been enjoying using nature's bounty the past few yrs and never noticed these.

I did plantain salve with great results 2 yrs ago.

Tried mullein tea this past winter for the congestion, but didn't find it helped much, so I'm going to make some tincture with it and the golden rod I dried last fall.

I have gut issues with onion and garlic (fresh), but I ate some of this and didn't have the same issues, so I'm making butter, pesto, and drying some for seasoning.

I've thought about making mustard too, but it seemed so time consuming when I looked at how it's dried. So? Maybe?

Have you taken that walk around your property to see what's available to forage?
