Picture Your Flowers is a live, online photography workshop with photographer and visual storyteller Allison Ashley.

We’ll talk about how to capture your flowers as beautifully as you grow them, with practical techniques you can use with any camera—including your phone.

We’ll cover things like natural light, composition, angles, simple editing, styling, finding your own visual style, and using your photos to tell the story behind what you grow.

SAVE THE DATE: Harvest to Vase is back!

Our first Harvest to Vase floral design class with floral designer Amber Mustain was such a fun and helpful evening that we knew we had to do it again.

Join us September 17 at 6:30 PM Central for a live, virtual floral design class created for flower growers and garden lovers who want to feel more confident turning what they grow into beautiful arrangements.

Amber will walk you through:

* How to choose the right mix of flowers and foliage
* How to use focal, line, filler, and supporting flowers
* Tips for harvesting and preparing your stems
* The basics of color, shape, movement, and balance
* Simple techniques to make your bouquets look more polished and professional

You’ll design right alongside Amber, ask questions, and get real-time feedback on your own arrangement.

Whether you grow flowers just for yourself, love making bouquets to give away, or want to sell your flowers, you’ll leave with practical skills you can use with whatever is blooming in your garden.

What a surprisingly delightful week. 💐

THE Jen Hamilton came to town for her first book signing of the summer, and Local Blooms got to celebrate the occasion the best way we know how to: with local-grown flowers!

I created a custom “Birth Vibes” bouquet inspired by the colors of Jen’s book cover.  I had so much fun choosing the perfect vase, wandering through the garden to cut just the right flowers, and then putting it all together and delivering it.

And then came the biggest surprise: Jen’s team invited us to the sold-out signing!

We got to meet Jen, Rebecca, and the team and spend the evening laughing in a room full of incredible women (and a few men, too). The joy was palpable.

Jen has done so much to empower women, make them laugh, help them feel seen, and remind them to trust themselves. Getting to meet her, and celebrate the launch of Birth Vibes with flowers grown right here in Colorado Springs, was such a treat and a memory I won’t forget.

Congratulations, Jen! Thanks for letting Local Blooms be a part of the Birth Vibes celebration. 🎉

You probably think about pesticide residues when you buy produce. But have you ever wondered what might be on the flowers you bring into your home?

Cut flowers are often treated with insecticides and fungicides throughout production. And because flowers aren’t intended to be eaten, pesticide residues on them aren’t regulated in the same way residues on food are.

In one study of 90 bouquets, researchers detected 107 different pesticide substances, with an average of about 10 per bouquet.

The really scary part? Researchers also tested the urine of the florists who had made those bouquets (and who were wearing double gloves while making them) and detected about 70 of those pesticides and their metabolites in the florists’ urine!

That doesn’t mean occasionally touching a bouquet carries the same risk as working with flowers every day. It also doesn’t mean every imported flower is unsafe or every locally grown flower is pesticide-free.

It does mean we deserve greater transparency about how our flowers are grown.

When you buy directly from a local grower, you can ask:

Were pesticides used?
What kinds?
How recently?
How does the grower manage pests?

A bouquet is more than something beautiful. Its story includes how it was grown and whose hands encountered it along the way.

Know your grower. Know your flowers. Buy local when you can.
