The seasons are changing...fall monarchs are back...planting season is...is...almost here. I'm cheating and getting a jump at home.

Fall planting time is here...time to plan and time to plant. In before the rain. In the picture...lots of desert mallow, island snapdragon, coast sunflower and for summer flowering lots of California fuchsia at the bottom.

We're starting to pot our pacific coast irises hybrids that we held over from last year. These will produce their new first blooms this spring. Here are also a few of last years first blooms. And yes....these could be in your shade garden TOO!

One of our exceptional pacific coast iris first blooms from last year. We'll have a lot more this year. The early ones start at the end of January and peak in mid-April.

For our customers both retail and wholesale that want to plant large quantities of pacific coast irises in a shade garden we now have them available in less expensive 4" containers. These are mixed seedlings.

For me the fun time of year is about to start. We begin to pot up our pacific coast iris seedlings. Some of the more interesting seedlings have been from crossing 'Ocean Blue' with 'Untitled'. These are both registered irises with 'Ocean Blue' being blue as you might guess and 'Untitled' is actually a yellow one with lots of veining (dark stripes). Here's the parent iris and we'll be potting up about 100 seedlings. Of these, 30 to 40 will be potted to 3 gallon pots and the rest to 1 gallon pots. Most will flower for the first time this spring. The 1 gallons will be ready for your garden late winter for the lucky person!
