Playing with weeds again. This time in Maine - my 💚 state. Native carex cut off the side of a bike trail, Queen Anne’s from a quarry neighboring my mom’s house, Silene volunteering in her garden, and beautiful native Meadowseet, my all-time favorite name for a flower, growing at the woods’ edge, with some onion blossoms poached from mom’s veggie bed…

Some of last week’s garden candy. And of course, some weeds for a good measure. I’d been hot and tired and grumpy, burnt out from a few months of back to back events, and struggling to keep up with my gardens, so I hadn’t wanted to make anything in a while. I really wasn’t in the mood to make this, even. But I have a lovely neighbor who lets me cut her otherworldly red Quince in the spring, and I had promised her an arrangement from my summer gardens when the time came for them to produce, and so here I was. Grateful for her Quince, but also grateful to be doing something nice for a neighbor and for being pushed to make something at a time I’m finding it hard to make anything. At a time that the world is quite literally going up in smoke around me ….

A strange one with stems I grew and foraged. I’ve been cutting these weird little pretties for weeks and storing them in the way back of my cooler hoping they would last until I had a minute to play with them. I’m now enjoying a lull in events, catching up with my gardens, finishing my “spring planting” and absorbing the solstice.

Happy solstice! An arrangement I made a couple weeks back with some of the last of my spring blooms.

I’ve been too swamped lately to do much of playing or posting… This is the time of year I juggle wedding & event work with planting, garden design and consulting, running my own growing op, and of course, my family. As for friends, well, I’m not much of one right now… but fortunately, I’ve surrounded myself with generous and understanding people, who know that I disappear in May and June. I woke up feeling especially pummeled last week, between the heat and an early drought and last-minute changes for upcoming events, and then I saw this. Like a little talisman. Sometimes it just takes a Tulip Poplar blossom landing on a splintered old porch to remind us why we do the things we do.

Feels like summer is on its way.
