While visiting North Carolina in 1888, George Washington Vanderbilt of the famous Vanderbilt railroad family became entranced by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains — and decided to build a "little mountain retreat" there. In the end, the construction of his Biltmore Estate was such a massive undertaking that it required its own woodworking factory, brick kiln, and railroad to bring building supplies to the site.
