When we closed at the end of 2011, we thought that we were moving to Puerto Rico to caretake an organic farm. When that fell through at the last moment, we were perplexed as to what the universe had in store for us. We fou
nd out a few months later when we happened to be driving down Santa Rosa in SLO and our friend John pulled up beside us and said, "We've been trying to find you! Rose has a store on the Embarcadero, but she doesn't have anything to put in it! We want you to put your stuff in there!" So we work there 2 days a week (volunteer) and I've been slowly but surely selling my inventory, a little at a time. I've been making and selling a lot of sage bundles, and that has been keeping things moving. Business is slow on the Embarcadero also. But at least I don't have the overhead of owning the store and paying rent, and that is a big relief. It's interesting, having owned a store in the downtown. Everybody thinks the Embarcadero somehow gets the lion's share of the traffic and sales in Morro Bay. But I am seeing that stores on the waterfront may get lots of foot traffic (mainly in the summer), but people spending habits are still determined by the state of the economy. Plus, business owners have to pay an additional 5% of their gross receipts to their landlords on behalf of "The Harbor". Some of the stores are not open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because it is so slow. So everyone is hurting. I don't know how the restaurants are surviving there. I hope you will stop by and see Ali and Cory on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, and maybe even just pick up a sage bundle or two to support a local business.
