Can you say Gunk? These two spring winding arbors and gears are just packed with nasty slimy and solid oil and grease. The strange thing is, the other gears weren't bad and the movement had been previously rebuilt. Taking the time to pick and scrape like a dental hygienist and a long hot bath in the ultrasonic, they didn't come out too bad.

When servicing a spring wound clock with mainsprings in barrels, it's imperative to remove the mainsprings to fully inspect and clean. Sometimes as in this instance, we find the external hole that catches onto the hook on the inside of the barrel, torn, meaning it's ripping towards the end of the spring. When it completely tears, the spring let's loose and can injure the person's fingers and possibly do damage to the movement. Here's an example, showing the damaged spring end, then the steps of making a new hole. The spring needs to be heated to cherry red to aneal at the end or take the temper out. Next the end needs to be shaped and a series of holes punched to create the proper shaped hole. A little filling and it's as good as new.

Well I machined and installed 11 bronze bushing in the movement. It was very surprising just how worn out it was with it only being 25 years old. Obviously it was never serviced causing excessive wear. I recommend service every 5 years, kinda like changing the oil in your car, and if you don't, you know what will happen. The pictures only show a few bushings because the others are hidden under all of the gearing and cams. Possibly tomorrow Ill post a video of it in the case.
