These beautiful hydrangeas are changing color right now! We have a variety of hydrangeas available, and I wanted to show them off once again so you all can see these magnificent blooms!

If you are interested in adding hydrangeas to your garden, but don’t know where to start, I made a list explaining the main types of hydrangeas:

- Bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) [Zone 5-9]

These hydrangeas change color based on the pH of the soil. Acidic soil (below 6.0) creates blue flowers, while a higher pH (7.0 and above) will turn the blooms pink! Grows between 3-6 ft tall/wide. Blooms late spring to early fall. They also bloom on old wood, so proper pruning time is crucial! Flower buds form during the previous growing season and overwinter on the stems, so the best time to prune is after the flowering during late summer.

- Panicle (Hydrangea paniculata) [Zone 3-8]

These types of hydrangeas are perfect for a full sun spot! They bloom midsummer through fall, and have this beautiful cone shape. The blooms start off white or very light green and transition to shades of pink later in the season. Panicle hydrangeas also bloom on new wood, so you don’t have to worry about missing the wrong pruning time like the Bigleaf varieties. Also very cold hardy compared to the other hydrangeas, panicles do well down to zone 3! Also reaches 6-8ft tall and wide.

- Smooth (Hydrangea arborescens) [3-9]

These are great for partial shade spots or woodland gardens! These bloom on new wood, and usually produce white or green round flower heads. Blooms early summer to the frost date. They get to be around 3-5 ft tall and wide.

- Oakleaf (Hydrangea quercifolia) [5-9]

Similar to Bigleaf hydrangeas, these bloom on old wood, so pruning time is essential for these varieties. Blooms from late spring to midsummer and reach around 4-8 ft tall and wide. Plant in a partly shaded area or a spot with morning sun.

- Climbing (Hydrangea petiolaris) [4-8]

Great for the side of a wall or a large sturdy trellis! Climbing hydrangeas get to 30-50 ft tall. Blooms early to midsummer.

Captured this moment of a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth a while ago! Off of first glance, you might think it’s an actual hummingbird, when it’s actually a part of the sphinx moth family!

These pollinators play a crucial part in our gardens as they collect nectar from deep tube-shaped flowers like Phlox, Butterfly Bush/Buddleja, Salvia, Petunias, Bee Balm and more.

Hi everyone, Michael’s is reopened and we are stocked on autumn vegetables and herbs! 🌱

We have beautiful varieties of lettuce, beets, carrots, snow peas, bok choy, radicchio, swiss chard (my favorite is the firebird variety in the last slide!), kale, basil, fennel and so much more!

There are also some wonderful aromatic plants such as rosemary, parsley, mint, sage, tarragon, scallions, and lots of other herbs available for purchase!

Limelight hydrangeas are in bloom! I love these shrubs because they get this beautiful pink-bronze color later in the season, and provide great summer and fall interest. And when they dry out completely on the plant, they add fantastic structure for the garden in winter. They also are stunning in dried floral arrangements!

Happy Monday everyone! 🌼

At Michael’s Garden Gate Nursery, we have so many gorgeous flowers in bloom right now! A variety of zinnias, celosia, marigolds, and flowering purslane are featured in the slideshow above :)

I also adore the combination of purple fountain grass with marigolds and celosia! It adds beautiful contrast for a late summer border.
