September is National Su***de Awareness Month. 💙

Sometimes, a book gets written long before you realize why you needed to write it.

During my final year pursuing my doctorate in psychology, I wrote a book called When Goodbye Has No Answer.

It was born out of a desire to explore something incredibly difficult to talk about: su***de and the people left behind.

For years, the book existed more as a piece of my own journey than as something I intended to formally publish. But as I revisited it, I began to realize that its message still matters.

So, with September being National Su***de Awareness Month, I felt that perhaps the time had finally come.

Next Tuesday, When Goodbye Has No Answer will be officially re-released and available on Amazon.

This isn’t a book written as a clinical guide for someone contemplating su***de. It isn’t intended to replace professional help, counseling, or crisis intervention.

It was written from another perspective — the perspective of those who survive the loss.

When someone dies by su***de, the tragedy doesn’t end with that person’s final breath. It leaves behind people who loved them and who may spend years trying to understand what happened.

There are questions.

There is guilt.

There is anger.

There is grief.

There are things left unsaid and things people wish they had said.

And sometimes, there simply are no answers.

That is where the title comes from:

When Goodbye Has No Answer.

I wrote this book during a very important chapter of my academic and personal journey. Yesterday, I revisited that work and prepared it for a proper published release — giving it the format, presentation, and illustrations I always hoped it could have.

After all these years, I’m finally letting it go into the world.

Maybe it will reach someone who has lost a parent, a spouse, a child, a sibling, or a friend.

Maybe it will help someone understand that the complicated emotions they’re experiencing don’t make them a bad person.

Maybe it will simply remind someone who is grieving that they aren’t alone.

That is why I am choosing to release it now.

When Goodbye Has No Answer — coming Tuesday to Amazon.

And if you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of su***de or is in immediate danger, please don’t wait. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

Sometimes saving a life begins with simply being willing to have the conversation.

And sometimes healing begins with finally giving ourselves permission to talk about the loss.

💙

🇺🇸 LABOR DAY & THE CLOCK: A LITTLE HISTORY FROM CLOCKWORKS EMPORIUM 🕰️

When we think of Labor Day, we usually think of a long weekend, cookouts, and the unofficial end of summer. But the holiday has a much deeper story — and, believe it or not, the clock played an important role in it.

The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, during an era when American workers were fighting for better working conditions and, importantly, a shorter workday.

One of the great rallying cries of the labor movement was:

“Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what we will.”

🕰️ So what does this have to do with clocks?

Before industrialization, many people’s working lives were influenced more by daylight, seasons, and the completion of a particular job than by a minute-by-minute schedule.

Factories changed that.

As industry grew during the 18th and 19th centuries, accurate timekeeping became increasingly important to everyday working life. Factory clocks, bells, whistles, and eventually individual watches helped determine when workers arrived, when shifts began and ended, and when breaks were taken.

The clock wasn’t simply hanging on the wall anymore.

Time had become part of the workplace.

⏱️ As labor movements pushed for reasonable working hours, measuring those hours accurately became increasingly important. The fight for the eight-hour day was, quite literally, a fight over who controlled a worker’s time.

⌚ By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, affordable pocket watches — and later wristwatches — increasingly put personal timekeeping into the hands of ordinary working people.

And there is something rather fitting about that.

A clock measures seconds and minutes, but Labor Day reminds us of the value of the people whose lives fill those hours.

At Clockworks Emporium, we spend a lot of time looking backward. Every antique clock has lived through a piece of history. Some once sat in farmhouses. Others kept time in businesses, schools, offices, factories, and family homes. They silently measured workdays, celebrations, hardships, ordinary afternoons, and generations of family life.

That’s one reason we believe old clocks are worth preserving.

They don’t just tell time.
They tell the story of how we lived it.

This Labor Day, we honor the generations of working men and women whose skill, determination, sacrifice, and persistence helped build our communities and improve working life for those who followed.

From two clock nerds who still believe history is one of the best parts of owning an old clock…

🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day from Clockworks Emporium! 🇺🇸
