October 1, 2026 — 6:00–8:00 p.m. - Carlotta LaNier & Dr. Leona Tate at the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, 304 Iowa Avenue, Muscatine, IA.

Two pivotal figures in America’s school integration history — Carlotta Walls LaNier of the Little Rock Nine and Dr. Leona Tate of the New Orleans Four — will visit Iowa October 1–3, 2026 for three evenings of powerful conversations on courage, equality, and the ongoing fight for educational justice.

While six year old Ruby Bridges is widely recognized for integrating William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960, that same morning Leona Tate, along with Gail Etienne and Tessie Prevost, integrated the all white McDonogh 19 Elementary School. Like Bridges, they were escorted by U.S. Marshals as they entered a school that had never before welcomed Black children.

Three years earlier, in 1957, Carlotta Walls LaNier and eight other Black teenagers — known as the Little Rock Nine — integrated Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas. Their entrance required protection from soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, marking one of the most defining confrontations of the Civil Rights Movement.

“The struggle for educational equality was never limited to one city or one state,” said Dr. Tate. “Susan Clark’s courage in Iowa during the 1860s and our experience in New Orleans during the 1960s are part of a larger history of young people and families challenging segregation and demanding the right to an equal education.”

Iowa’s own landmark case began in 1867, when 12 year old Susan Clark was denied admission to Muscatine’s all white school. Her father, civil rights leader Alexander Clark, took the case to the Iowa Supreme Court — and won. The 1868 ruling made Iowa the first state to guarantee equal access to public education regardless of race.

“Bringing these stories together allows us to recognize both the progress that has been made and the work that remains,” Tate added.
