Saturday’s Finds: I buy collections. Actually I should have said I like to buy collections. There’s no rhyme or reason why people collect what they collect. Their collection has meaning to them. An item, event, pet or person is significant enough to make an impression leading to an accumulation. Sometimes the collection collects a handful of items and sometimes the collector becomes a hoarder. What ever the case for me it’s nice to find a modest collection such as these early Lucille Ball movie posters and lobby cards.

When I entered the home that they were in the first thing I noticed was how nicely framed they were and that they were arranged attractively in a long hallway. Original to the 1940’s and 50’s this collection is a nice representation of the actress’s early days before she became a powerhouse on television.

You’re not pretty enough, you’re too tall, you need to do something with your hair, you’ll never make it in the business, you should give up and find another vocation she was told not once but over and over again. She kept trying. Inventing, reinventing, and kept pushing, kept trying.

These fourteen posters are from her early contract days and she, if you’ve ever seen any of these movies, isn’t the zany redhead we all know. She had a style of her own and that set her apart from other actresses of that time. She was her own woman.

Lucille Désirée Ball (August 6, 1911 – April 26, 1989) was a comedian, actress, producer, and studio executive. Time magazine recognized her as one of the most influential women of the 20th century. She was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning five. She won a Golden Globe Award and has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She earned the Women in Film Crystal Award, and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. She also received the Governors Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She also was awarded posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom 1989. All of these Accolades and awards went to someone studio casting advised to find another line of work.

She and her husband founded their own studio and production company and she was one of the first if not the first female executives In the industry. By the way, a little series in the mid 1960’s was signed, produced and and televised because “Lucy Liked It” - that series was Star Trek.

I didn’t meet the gentleman that found and collected these early posters. I would have like to; he had good taste and could say without hesitation when asked about he collection “I Love Lucy”
How about you?

Today’s Finds: a nice collection of cranberry Pilgrim Glass which was founded in 1949 by Alfred Knobler in Huntington, West Virginia. The company closed in 2002. Though not as pricy as Fenton glass Pilgrim’s cranberry and crackle glass line is respectable and a favorite of collectors of WVa glassware.

It’s anniversary time again. I officially opened Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery 26 years ago today after working 17 years at the first antiques mall in this area. My business plan was simple, I wanted to make enough to pay the bills and restock my inventories. I’m still paying bills and my inventory has definitely expanded over the years. Thank you for supporting the dream, Bryan

Today’s Finds: I never know what I find when making a house call. When the owner is grandmotherly I usually find collectibles from a specific time period such as these Hummel figurines, bone china Cups & Saucers and colorful glassware that were originally made 50 to 70 years age. These and other decorative items can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC open normally 10-4 Wednesday-Saturday.

Brad at Art & Frame Gallery in the old Waccamaw Pottery knocked it out of the park with this custom frame. The iconic Neal Adams signed and remarked limited edition print certainly deserved a super frame and my photos don’t do it justice. This and other graphic art can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC open 10-4 Wednesday-Saturday normally.

You either love them or hate them; there’s no middle ground. Lladro began producing porcelain items in 1953 in Almàssera, Spain. Founded by three brothers - Juan, José, and Vicente Lladro - the brand grew from a small, family-owned ceramic workshop into a world renowned porcelain brand. Their distinct toned pastel colors and single-firing method coupled with highly detail and artistic designs set Lladro apart from all others except maybe NAO which happens to be a sister company. I affectionately call NAO Baby Lladro because the artist they use often go through a training period there before the are employed by Lladro. NAO figures do not command the same price as Lladro pieces do. These Lladros and others can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC.
