One thing homeschooling has taught me is that learning often happens in unexpected ways.
Our family has always enjoyed board games. 🎲 For me, the competition is lighthearted fun — I don’t have to win to enjoy the experience. My boys, however, sometimes take competition very seriously. 😅 Over the years, I’ve often reminded them that it’s not just about winning, but about how you play the game.
Recently, I found myself needing that same reminder.
Last month, I participated in a community Pitch Night for small businesses, where five businesses were selected to present for a chance at funding. 💼✨ After weeks of preparation, long hours, and stepping far outside my comfort zone, I walked away without a prize.
As I packed up my displays at the end of the night, I’ll admit — it was disappointing.
But over the following days, my perspective slowly began to change.
I realized that, much like homeschooling, not every meaningful experience ends with a visible reward or measurable achievement. Sometimes the real value is found in the growth that happens along the way. 🌱
I learned new skills, met encouraging people, gained confidence, and stretched myself in ways I never would have otherwise. What first felt discouraging has gradually turned into gratitude for the opportunity.
As homeschool parents, we spend so much time encouraging our children to keep trying, keep learning, and keep growing — even when things don’t go the way they hoped. This experience reminded me that those lessons apply to us, too. ❤️
Sometimes success isn’t about “winning.”
Sometimes success is simply having the courage to show up and play the game.
