Lord of the Flies: A Banned Book That Refuses to Behave

What happens when a group of schoolboys is stranded on an island with no adults, no rules, and absolutely no one telling them to make good choices?

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies begins as an adventure and quickly descends into something much darker. As the boys attempt to create their own society, fear, power, rivalry, and violence take over, revealing just how thin the line between civilization and chaos can be.

First published in 1954, Lord of the Flies has been challenged and banned in schools and libraries over the years for its violence, language, and disturbing themes.

And, naturally, that means it has a place on our shelves.

At Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop, we have an entire Banned & Challenged Books section dedicated to books that someone, somewhere, decided you probably shouldn’t read.

We think you should decide that for yourself.

Come browse the forbidden shelves at Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop. The books don’t bite.

Usually.

Meet the newest residents of Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop…

Introducing Little Skollars, our delightfully haunted collection of literary legends who have finally lost their heads… but never their stories.

Adopt your very own Little Skollar and bring home one of these wonderfully questionable companions:
• Alice
• Mark Twain
• Edgar Allan Poe
• Jane Austen
• Shakespeare

They’ll happily sit on your bookshelf, silently judge your reading choices, and whisper absolutely nothing… at least while you’re watching.

Choose wisely. Some stories refuse to stay buried. Which Little Skollar is coming home with you?

Some stories are meant to be read.

Others are better left unopened.

Our horror shelves are filled with haunted houses, ancient curses, restless spirits, unsettling forests, and the sort of mysteries that make every creak in your home sound… suspicious.

Browse if you dare. Just don’t be surprised if you suddenly start sleeping with the lights on… or if one of the books seems to know your name.

Sweet dreams. Or at least… try.

Hear ye! Hear ye! The ghosts have issued a royal decree:

Thou shalt not judge a peasant by their muddy boots.

How Not to Be a Basic Peasant is a hilarious illustrated guide to surviving medieval life, packed with bizarre history, questionable etiquette, and practical advice you never knew you needed… like how not to embarrass yourself in front of a king, a knight, or the village goose.

Our resident ghosts insist this is less of a history book and more of a survival manual. Apparently several of them ignored its advice centuries ago… and, well… they’re still hanging around to regret it.

Now haunting the shelves at Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop. Perfect for history lovers, castle dreamers, and anyone hoping to avoid becoming the village’s next cautionary tale.

Some doors should stay locked. Some motels should stay vacant. And some people… should definitely not run them.

Robert Bloch’s Psycho is the chilling novel that inspired one of the most iconic horror films ever made. When Mary Crane steals a bundle of cash and checks into the lonely Bates Motel, she expects one quiet night before disappearing. Instead, she stumbles into a nightmare involving the unsettling Norman Bates… and a house on the hill that seems to be watching everything.

It’s creepy, clever, and guaranteed to make you think twice before checking into a roadside motel.

Available now at Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop. Just remember… if someone says, “Mother would like to meet you,” it’s perfectly acceptable to leave. Quietly. Very, very quickly.

Behind every beautiful gate… there’s a terrible secret.

At the mysterious University of Verenmore, Corvina Clemm arrives hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a campus filled with whispered legends, unsolved disappearances that happen every five years, hidden passageways, and a brooding professor who seems to know far more than he’s willing to admit.

Gothikana blends gothic romance, mystery, and dark academia into a story full of forbidden attraction, eerie secrets, and enough suspense to keep you reading long after everyone else has gone to bed.

Perfect for readers who love haunted castles, mysterious old schools, morally gray characters, and romance wrapped in shadows.

Available now at Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop. If someone tells you not to open the old iron gate… they’re probably speaking from experience.

School’s out, the ghosts are unsupervised, and our books have started recruiting readers.

If your kids are home for summer break, send them somewhere safe… like a haunted bookshop. The ghosts only rearrange the shelves on Tuesdays.

This week’s spooky (and slightly ridiculous) recommendations:

Whale, That Was Unexpected
A fishing trip goes spectacularly wrong when a whale decides to become part of the story. Expect big laughs, bigger surprises, and one very awkward conversation about personal space.

Those Darn Squirrels!
An old grump declares war on squirrels. The squirrels disagree. What follows is a hilarious battle of wits that proves you should never underestimate tiny furry troublemakers.

Knight Owl and Early Bird
A tiny owl knight meets an energetic bird who wakes up far too early. Together they discover that bravery, friendship, and not getting enough sleep can save the kingdom.

Harold Snipperpot’s Best Disaster Ever
Harold’s day starts normally… and then somehow involves an elephant, absolute chaos, and one unforgettable adventure. Proof that sometimes your biggest disaster becomes your best story.

Young Queens: A Most Mysterious Manor
A clever young royal inherits a manor packed with secrets, strange discoveries, and enough mystery to keep even the nosiest ghost entertained. Perfect for readers who dream of castles, hidden passages, and dramatic entrances.

Stop by Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop this summer. We can’t promise the ghosts will help you pick a book… but they do have surprisingly good taste.

Today’s recommendation from the haunted shelves…

Some families pass down recipes.

Some pass down jewelry.

This one passes down… murder.

“How to Kill Your Family” by Bella Mackie is a darkly funny thriller about Grace Bernard, a woman with a long grudge and an even longer to-do list. After being rejected by her wealthy father’s family, she decides to take revenge in the most creative way possible, crossing relatives off the family tree one by one. But when she’s finally arrested… it’s for a murder she didn’t commit.

It’s witty, twisted, surprisingly funny, and filled with enough dark humor to make our resident ghosts nod in approval.

The ghosts in the bookshop would like to remind everyone that this book is fiction.

Probably.

Stop by Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop and get a copy before someone else… eliminates the competition.

Happy 4th of July weekend from the ghosts at Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop!

Looking for a little patriotic… paranormal reading?

The Most Haunted House in America is proof that even the White House has a few residents who never officially moved out.

Perfect for kids who like their history with a side of ghosts, giggles, and just enough spooky to keep the fireworks company.

Stop by this weekend, adopt a haunted book, and remember… if someone whispers “Happy Independence Day” from an empty aisle, it’s probably just one of our regulars. We recommend waving back. It would be rude not to.

If you’ve ever looked at a peaceful forest and thought, “Something in there is probably plotting against me,” then Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher might be your next favorite read.

Set in the woods of North Carolina, this Southern Gothic horror follows scientific illustrator Sonia Wilson as she accepts a job documenting insects for a mysterious entomologist. Instead, she discovers that something far older, far hungrier, and definitely not listed in any field guide is lurking in the forest.

As always, we recommend reading this one with the lights on… and perhaps avoiding long walks in the woods afterward. If you hear rustling behind you, it’s probably just the wind.

Probably.
