Food is an integral part of our memories, culture, and everyday lives.
Toys by their miniature nature propose a different perspective, easily drawing us into another point of view. By using toys and food I am able to construct worlds that seem strangely familiar; but upon further examination, also reveal unexpected and playful scenarios. Blurring the lines of reality by altering the scale of people, food, and landscapes. Telling stories through pictures – sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, but always rooted in our universal connection to food and each other.

A native of Nantucket, Michael Gaillard lives and works in Brooklyn. Gaillard received his Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University and his Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University. As an undergraduate, Gaillard discovered the large-format camera. His work with this device continues to this day, most explicitly within the context of his landscapes. Featured prominently within this body of work is his Nantucket portfolio that has been exhibited and collected widely. Gaillard has taught undergraduate photography at Columbia University.

I know everyone is excited about the recent arrival of Mathew Carden to The Seven Seas Gallery. In this series the fantastic images composed of food and miniatures are based on the story of The Essex. Like Melville, Carden delivered the compelling tale before ever having washed up on The Grey Lady.
