The Balancer Boys are back. Last time they sold out in 2 days.

Our first batch of Cohen’s Balancers sold out almost immediately, so he finally came back with 8 more - and this time they’re new and improved.

Thicker rebar. Higher step for softer ground. Better visibility of the rubber rod protection.

And since the first video generated a TON of questions, Cohen also gives us a proper demonstration of how the Balancer actually works.

The idea is pretty clever: your reel acts as part of the counterweight, the rod balances on the holder, and a fish pulling on your line creates a very noticeable movement. Great for those subtle sturgeon and striper bites that can otherwise be easy to miss.

We have 8 available at Sweeney’s Sports right now.

⚠️ Local pickup only — we’re not shipping these yet.

Could You Run a Tackle Shop? Price This Reel Lot. Alright, let’s try something new. 🎣

Today, you’re running Sweeney’s Sports.

We just took a look at this whole lot of used reels, and I want YOU to decide:

💰 What would you pay for the whole lot?

🏷️ What would you try to sell it for?

There are Shimano Siennas, old USA-made Penns, a Penn Senator, Abu Garcia, an old West German Quick reel and a few other surprises in the pile.

Condition matters. Some are pretty clean. Some… not so much.

Put your BUY PRICE + SELL PRICE in the comments.

Closest overall guess to our actual numbers gets a Sweeney’s hat — plus the honor of apparently knowing how to run a tackle shop. 😂

Let’s see what you’ve got.

You Asked to See More of Al’s Collection | Part 2

Al's harpoon collection keeps getting more interesting.

Old saltwater reels, an Orvis fly/spin setup, a Pflueger loaded with wire line, boxes of tackle, fishing oddities—and somehow I ended up buying a boat ladder from him in the middle of the deal. 😂

One of my favorite parts of taking in old collections is hearing why somebody owned and used all this gear in the first place.

And we’re still not done.

Part 3 coming next.

Every Old Fishing Rod Has a Story. Sometimes the best part of buying a fishing collection isn’t figuring out what the gear is worth. It’s hearing where it’s been.

Ron brought us part of his collection and had a story for just about everything.

A vintage 400 Mitchell he probably found for $10 at a yard sale. A beautiful old Penn 155M Beachmaster in the box. And his favorite — a Fenwick FT109 his dad gave him around his 15th birthday.

Ron grew up on the Mad River, where his family kept a boat and trolled streamer flies behind a little 3-horse Evinrude. He says he caught countless salmon and steelhead on that Fenwick.

The rod is still fishable today — but after hearing the story behind it, it feels like a lot more than just an old fishing rod.

That’s what we love about Pond Stars. The gear gets another life, and sometimes we get to hear a little piece of fishing history along the way.

He Won Catch of the Month… Then Gave His Prize Away.

This is one of our favorite parts of running a tackle shop.

These young anglers came in just getting started with bass fishing. Axel helped them pick out their first setups, and they also got a surprise from another Sweeney’s customer.

Gerardo (gwow on instagram) won our Catch of the Month contest a couple months ago with a big sturgeon. Instead of using his $30 gift card, he told us to give it to a kid and help keep someone new in the sport.

So today, we got to do exactly that.

Thank you, Gerardo—and good luck to these guys with their new Daiwa Tatula setups. Now we’re waiting for the first bass photos! 🎣

He Walked In With a Fishing Collection - Then Pulled Out a Harpoon

You never know what someone is going to bring into Sweeney’s.

Al stopped by with a collection of rods, reels and tackle gathered from different kinds of fishing—including some serious East Coast bluefin gear. We found an Orvis pack rod, trolling equipment, packaged lures, a flying gaff and an actual harpoon.

The best part was taking our time, hearing the stories behind the equipment and figuring out which pieces could find a second life with another angler.

Thanks for bringing it in, Al. We had a great time looking through everything!

Do you have fishing gear sitting unused in your garage? Bring it to Sweeney’s Sports or submit it through our Pond Stars used-gear program.
