Question: When should you get your hearing checked?

Answer: At the first sign of symptoms.

Early detection and treatment can greatly improve treatment outcomes. If you are asking others to repeat and feel like others are mumbling, you should schedule a hearing evaluation.

Even if you are not experiencing symptoms, hearing tests should be included in your annual check ups.

There are several different types of hearing loss. The most common type we see in the hearing healthcare profession is called Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

In fact, 90% of hearing loss is Sensorineural. This type of loss is often associated with “nerve deafness” which isn’t entirely accurate. The loss is generally caused by damage to the hair cells within the cochlea.

Common causes of Sensorineural Hearing Loss include aging, prolonged exposure to loud noise, injury, disease, and ototoxic medications.

Most hearing aids are designed with this common loss in mind so treatment for this type of loss is highly successful.

Study Finds a Possible Link Between Staying Active and Better Hearing in Older Adults

Researchers from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COMD) have partnered with faculty from across the Arnold School and USC to complete a study investigating the connections between physical function, blood pressure, hearing, and cognition among older adults. Published in Scientific Reports, the team found that participants who maintained higher levels of physical function (i.e., engaging in everyday physical activities) were less likely to experience hearing loss.
