Adornment tells a story without uttering a word.

Our ancestors also wanted to feel beautiful.

Our ancestors also wanted to feel beautiful.

This 3,500 years old necklace features the lizard, which the Egyptians catalogued as a snake with legs and revered for its ability to regrow limbs and for its love of the sun, which was interpreted as a clear association to the sun god Atum.
There are 19 lizard beads in this necklace, each one crafted by hammering a sheet of gold against a sunk-relief pattern of the reptile, then backing the image with a second, flat sheet of gold. The central drop was inlaid with lapis lazuli, while the barrel beads and the single poppy-pod pendant at one end of the string were formed from carnelian. The hollow, drop-shaped pendants, meanwhile, have a loop soldered at both ends, indicating they were originally meant to be strung between two rows of beads, creating a collar. Whether they were repurposed in antiquity or restrung at a later stage remains unknown, since the necklace was sold as-is by the inhabitants of Saqqara to the Swedish-Norwegian Consul who served in Cairo between 1828 and 1857.

Red silk is significant to the earrings the Fulani wear. The gems are tundra sapphire, carnelian, garnet, and coral- colors from the same palette as the beautiful women in my favorite book, Africa Adorned. Feel beautiful!
