Anne’s friendship with Mrs. Smith has always been one of the most touching parts of Persuasion. It becomes even more heartwarming when Captain Wentworth takes it upon himself to “stir” into the neglected affairs of her late husband’s estate, helping secure a happier future for one of Austen’s most deserving characters.

“There was so much attachment to Captain Wentworth in all this, and such a conviction of his happiness in her happiness, that Anne was deeply affected.”

Thinking about Elizabeth Elliot this morning while finishing a second cup.

“Putting the book away, [she] pushed it from her with an angry air.”

“It” of course being The Baronetage.

Elizabeth is easy to laugh at. Austen certainly intended some satire, yet beneath the vanity lies a woman facing one of the quiet tragedies of her age: watching the future she expected slowly slip away … and in Elizabeth’s case, into the abyss of humiliating spinsterhood and reduced circumstances.

Maybe Elizabeth is less a caricature than a woman shaped, and ultimately wounded, by the very society that taught her what mattered.
