🚂 You’ve seen what we make. Now meet the people who make it happen.

At Rail Yard Studios, old railroad steel gets a second life—but there’s a pretty interesting group of people behind every piece we build.

Our crew has operated heavy equipment in Antarctica, climbed the Grand Tetons, traveled to 39 countries, learned multiple languages, appeared in country music videos, chased Pokémon, thrown a haka dance into the workday…and yes, someone even thought bungee jumping from a crane in a supermarket parking lot was a good idea. 😂

Different backgrounds. Different talents. Different paths that somehow led everyone to the same rail yard.

And maybe that’s exactly why it works.

It takes a certain kind of person to look at weathered rail, old timber and massive pieces of steel and see something worth saving.

🥄 Rail Spoons

No, the railroad didn’t forget its silverware.

Those spoon-shaped pieces you sometimes spot along the tracks are rail spoons—heavy steel tools designed for railroad work, not dinner.

Like so many things along the right-of-way, they were built for one job: move something heavy, hold something stubborn, or make the impossible a little easier.

At Rail Yard Studios, we’re fascinated by the tools most people walk right past without ever wondering what they did.

Rejected by the railroad. Perfect for us.

These railroad ties are culls—ties that didn’t make the cut for use on the tracks, but are just right for building furniture.

Before we ever make the first cut, they sit and dry for at least three months. Rush that process, and the wood can warp later.

Then comes the tape measure.
Then the chainsaw.

Then, eventually, a piece of furniture built from something the railroad didn’t want.

Around here, a rejection is often just raw material waiting for a better job.

Looks like this bench found its line.

🏆 Introducing the Short Line Bench.

You voted. The ballots were counted. And Short Line pulled into the station ahead of Siding, Spur, and Trackwork.

A fitting name for a bench with railroad in its bones—and a little shorter route than most. 🛤️

🐸 Not all frogs are trying to cross the tracks.

Some of them ARE the tracks.

Railroad frogs are massive pieces of manganese steel engineered to take a beating—millions of wheels passing over them as trains move from one track to another.

We love pieces like this because most people have seen them without ever knowing what they’re called—or what they do.

At Rail Yard Studios, the materials we work with come with a past. Sometimes that past is stamped into the steel. Sometimes you have to know where to look.

Railroad tracks have a tendency to wander. 🚂

Temperature changes, vibration and the constant force of trains can cause rail to slowly “creep” down the track. Rail anchors say: not today.

These small but mighty pieces of railroad hardware clip onto the rail and bear against the cross tie, helping keep the rail exactly where it belongs. They come in several styles, with names like Fair, Unit and Channellock.

They may look like hunks of old steel to most people. To us, they’re pieces of railroad history—and every object in our shop has a story.

That’s what Rail Yard Studios is all about: preserving the materials, ingenuity and history of the American railroad, one piece at a time. 🛤️⚒️
