So, the last episode of “WILL IT PICK?” featured the “Pomeranian Technique” and garnered some very interesting comments and reactions. Many people asked: “Are there any other animal-focused products or materials that also create very unique tonalities on guitar?”. Actually, there are over 700+ known “tone chasing” techniques utilizing God's wonderful creatures for face-melting tone. In this episode, we'll explore one of rarest styles of slide guitar tonality in a technique called “The Narwhal Slide”. The position of the small whale is key to this slide technique; typically the animal sits comfortably just under the instrument and between the player's legs. These aquatic creatures are very timid and private, but perform well when given a strong Delta Blues or Southern Rock rhythm section that ignites their inner “Duane Allman” spirit. The Narwhal featured in this short demonstration is a rare albino whale, and was coated in Vaseline to lock in it's natural body moisture while performing a rousing rendition of “You Gotta Move” by Mississippi Fred McDowell.
