Insane Fluorite formations in this specimen from the Stonewall shaft! These Carthage corners were once full cubes & dissoluted to leave just the corners, but also show a dramatic regrowth of dissolution stepped fluorite all around those Carthage corners! Sitting on a beautiful bed of Sphalerite, and coated with bits of a druzy chert, this is a combo and formation we don’t see as often from the Elmwood Mine! A lot of the Fluorite from the Stonewall shaft is pretty unusual and jaw dropping, compared to the fluorites we see from the other shafts at this locality! Lots of dissolution happened in this decline, and caused some really cool and amazing growth formations to happen! Check out the blunt tip growth of the Fluorite corners too?! Those aren’t damaged, just an unusual modified habit opposed to the sharp corners typically seen!
With the recent sale from Nyrstar to Korea Zinc, we’re unsure of when or if this mine will open back up and allow specimens like this to come out on the market again. Unfortunately it seems as if it will be at least a few more years until the mine reopens under new ownership, and from what we understand is when they do open back up they will start processing not only zinc (Sphalerite) but also Fluorite. Specimens like these will become increasingly harder to find in the future, in our opinion!
Isn’t this one a beauty? We’ve got a few hundred specimens from Stonewall we’re still prepping, and these guys are hard to clean! From sitting under water for so long they developed a large coating of minerals on top & and we’ve had to hand clean each one in a much larger scale than we typically do! But with that said the work is worth it, as we’ve seen some very crazy specimens come from this shaft! Can’t wait to finish cleaning this collection fully though & get some more of these stunning pieces out on the market! Contact us today for retail or wholesale options!
Have a Rock’N Day!
