It’s September, Witches!!!

& I’m starting off my Practical Magic Fall with my first witchy tip of the season… The Practical Magick of Tending to Self

This is the part of witchcraft I wish we talked about more. The work done barefoot in the kitchen, in the bath, over smoking herbs, between the ordinary pieces of your day. The most important spells are born from the continual tending of the Self.

The most foundational principle I learned during my own training is this: The state of the practitioner determines the outcome of the working.

If you have never learned regulation, grounding, deep concentration, containment and control of your own internal state, you are skipping the training that makes deliberate magical action possible. This is why emotional & nervous system regulation belong in practical magick.

Not because a witch needs to be perfectly calm to perform spellwork. Emotion itself can be used as power. Anger, grief, desire, devotion and ecstasy all hold places within magical practice.

Emotional Regulation gives you the capacity to experience, contain, and intentionally work with strong emotional currents without becoming overwhelmed/ruled by them. What you’re seeing here is pieces of my own practical magical maintenance: Before Saining my home, I check in with myself, practicing emotional & nervous system regulation (through cleansing, intuitive movement, & energy healing) alongside assessment and activation of my inner cauldrons so I am able to use those energy centers to channel, gather energetic information, & be ready to move the energies in my home as needed.

I assess where my nwyfre (life force) is depleted, excessive, stagnant or poorly distributed before deciding what needs to be tended within myself. This gives me information about the condition I am bringing into ritual and spellwork instead of blindly raising more power and hoping it goes where I intend.
This is foundational witchcraft. If your spellwork continually produces inconsistent results, you may need to develop the skills that build the foundation your magic grows from.

This weekend’s Witches Circle explores working with deities as a path of personal and spiritual development.

We’ll learn how relationships with different deities can help us cultivate qualities they embody—courage, sovereignty, wisdom, creativity, discipline, healing, leadership, boundaries, transformation, and more—while also revealing the places within ourselves that need attention and growth.

We’ll explore deity communication, offerings and reciprocity, devotion, discernment, invocation, ritual, and magical practice, alongside practical ways to bring the lessons of deity work beyond the altar and into everyday life.

Whether you already have an established deity practice or are learning how to begin, this circle is an opportunity to deepen your relationship with the divine while also deepening your understanding of yourself.

Queen Medb of Connacht…
Warrior Woman. Woman King. Steward of Oweynagat. A woman deeply connected to the power & wisdom of the Otherworld, Queen Medb is an absolute legend. Medb is a spiritual guide & ally to all women, especially survivors, offering her wisdom to those in need of strength to reclaim their power & rise!
She has become a deeply healing & impactful spirit guide in my personal practice & I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to honor her with this circle. Medb matters deeply to women in the modern day because her story gives us something women are still fighting to reclaim: the right to belong completely to ourselves. As women rise again into greater ownership of our bodies, our voices, our work, our spiritual authority, and the direction of our own lives, Medb’s story has much to teach us.

This is why I wanted to devote an entire circle to Medb.

There is so much more to this woman than the famous cattle raid.

I want us to learn about the Medb who survived. The Medb who ruled. The woman who understood generosity as part of sovereignty and hospitality as part of kingship. The Medb who commanded warriors while refusing to surrender her sexuality or independence. The queen whose court stood upon a landscape alive with the Otherworld.

We will spend the evening learning her lore before opening sacred space to honor Medb through journey, ritual, and offerings.

I cannot wait to invite the spirit of this legendary Woman-King to the hearth this Saturday evening!

THE CAULDRON OF POETIC CHANNELLING

Through the bardic tradition, people learned that Awen could be consciously received and channelled. The Cauldron of Cerridwen was not only a vessel —it became the source from which the bard learned to draw power, healing, & inspiration.

The bard became like a hollow bone or flute, quieting the self so the current of Awen could move through breath, voice, poetry, prophecy, and song.

The voice became the vessel. Through rhythm, vibration, and inspired speech, Awen was carried from the unseen into the physical world, allowing others to experience its presence.

In this way, the mystery carried into the world through Taliesin became a practice: rather than possessing Awen, the bard learned to open themselves to it, receive it, and allow it to flow through them.

Ancient Celts strictly separated learned verse (rhyming by skill) from inspired verse (Awen/Imbas). Inspired verse was viewed as an objective metaphysical truth handed down directly by the gods.

Glám Dícenn (The Satire of Truth): If a king was corrupt, a bard would enter a focused state of Awen to craft a satirical curse. Because the bard spoke from a place of absolute cosmic truth, the spell was believed to physically blister the skin of the corrupt ruler or dry up the land’s fertility, enforcing justice through the sheer power of true sound.

Teinm Laída & Díchetal do Channaib: These were two of the “Three Illuminations” taught to high-level poets. Díchetal do Channaib meant “extempore incantation from the fingertips.” Practitioners would touch an injured person, a relic, or an infected area, and immediately stream improvised, rhythmic vocal chants. The vibration of the vocal tracking was used to pinpoint the spiritual root of an illness and “sing” the displaced energy back into its proper channel.
