It’s a little embarrassing when you have to be reminded to do the thing you help other people do for a living. 😂

I’m learning that sometimes all my understanding is also a very sophisticated way of staying a few inches away from what I actually feel.

So this is my messy middle: less figuring it out. More letting myself feel it.

And discovering, oh. I can handle this.

Apparently the way out really might be through.

Some lessons don't stay learned.

Life hands you a different relationship, a different heartbreak, a different version of the same old ache — and suddenly you're learning them again.

Mine is: don't abandon yourself.

I've done the therapy. I've named the pattern. And I can still lose myself inside it.

Maybe that's not failing the lesson.

Maybe the lesson is learning how to come back to yourself.

Again. And again. ❤️
is not linear

We talk a lot about learning to self-soothe.

I want us to talk just as much about learning to reach.

To receive comfort.

To notice when someone we love needs us and know how to respond.

Needing each other isn’t something we need to outgrow. ❤️

There was a moment this week when I felt really alive.

I posted something I was genuinely proud of…and about ten minutes later, my attachment system started asking, “Will I be welcomed?”

Turns out, therapists don’t get to skip being human.

The goal isn’t to become so confident that you never question yourself again.

The goal is to make room for both:
✨ the part of you that hopes you’ll be welcomed,
✨ and the part that knows you might not be.

Then showing up anyway.

That’s what courage looks like for me these days.

And yes…Johnny makes a cameo 🐾 He seems far less concerned about Instagram than I am.

My therapist asked one question…

…and suddenly my entire monologue about my partner became much less interesting. 😂

Therapy has a funny way of doing that.

Sometimes the biggest shift isn’t changing another person.

It’s getting curious about what’s happening inside us.

The older I get, the less interested I am in having the hottest take.

I'm much more interested in ideas that hold up over time.

These are a few beliefs that have quietly shaped the way I see people after 25 years as a therapist.

Some are about relationships.
Some are about being human.
All of them have taken longer to learn than they do to read.

I'd love to know—which one stayed with you?

One of the biggest shifts in my work as a therapist wasn't learning a new technique.

It was learning to ask a different question.

Instead of asking, "How do we stop this behavior?"

I started asking, "What need is this behavior trying to meet?"

Many of the behaviors we judge most harshly—self-criticism, shutting down, people-pleasing—didn't appear out of nowhere.

Often, they developed as ways of protecting us or helping us get important needs met.

That doesn't mean they're always helpful.

But it does mean they make sense.

And when we begin with curiosity instead of judgment, we create the conditions for lasting change.

I'm curious...

What behavior in yourself has become easier to understand when you looked beneath it instead of trying to fight it?

Sometimes the hardest question isn’t, “What happened?”

It’s, “What was that like for you?”

If you’ve learned to explain someone else’s intentions before acknowledging your own experience, you might have been protecting something very important: connection.

Understanding someone’s intent and honoring your own impact are not opposites.

Your experience matters too.

One of the most painful things I see in my work is how many people believe their need for connection is the problem.

It's not.

The problem is the shame they've carried about having needs in the first place.

You were never meant to do life alone.
