Hello and how are you doing?
SMS, means "special mint set". Mint & Proof sets can be found in coin shops, ordering from the mint, many places on line including eBay. But those are mint-proof sets. Don't get me wrong. There are lots of SMS sets out the for sale. And those special sets where issued 1965,66 & 67. No proof sets where issued for those years and only sold to collectors. The 5 coins "50c 25c 10c 5c & 1c" all came in a box. Well, 1966 & 67 did. 1965 came in a wrap as did pre 1965s. The coins in these SMS sets where hand picked off the line for these sets. And with no mint-marks placed on coins of those years. We have an upset in our grading practices of at least those 3 years. Prices & available for the coins from in those sets at high MS are favorable. But here is the catch. When you buy online and in all the shops I've been in. When buying sets especially SMS they're 87% already picked of the set and replaced with regular ones of that year. Remember no mint markes or proofs. Any uncirculated coin of that year can be represented as SMS when not. Always by from trusted people and always know your
coins. Here is a SMS 1966 set with MS67 through out with the nickel at MS66.
