Pearl, the traditional birthstone for June, is one of the most unique gems in the world because it is the only birthstone created by a living creature rather than mined from the earth. Formed when a mollusk layers nacre around an irritant inside its shell, pearls have symbolized purity, grace, and emotional balance for centuries. Ancient Middle Eastern cultures believed pearls were teardrops fallen from heaven, while other legends claimed they were formed by moonlight touching the sea. Their name comes from the Old French perle, derived from the Latin perna, meaning “leg,” a reference to the shape of certain mollusk shells. Because perfectly round natural pearls are incredibly rare, they have long been associated with rarity, wisdom, and refined beauty. Their organic origin, soft iridescence, and rich folklore continue to make pearls one of the most cherished and meaningful gemstones.
