Feeding a family of 4 on $200 a month doesn’t start at the grocery store.
It starts in the pantry… and the freezer… and the fridge… and all those random cupboards filled with food you’ve already purchased. (I see you having seven bottles of hoisin sauce. 🤣)
This January, I’m doing a pantry challenge to stretch what we have, waste less food, and make our grocery budget actually work for real life after the busy holiday season.
Here’s how I’m doing it 👇
🥫 Pantry first
Before I meal plan or shop, I’m taking inventory of our pantry, fridge, and freezer. The focus is using what we already have. Not just shopping based on cravings that week.
💰 Set a budget
This will look different for every family. Sit down and decide what your number is. For us, it’s $50 a week for the few items needed to turn pantry staples into full meals, plus basics like milk, eggs, and produce. We also have most of a ¼ beef from a few months ago, so expect lots of beef recipes this month.
📝 Pantry priorities
Each week, I’m choosing specific items I want to use up and building meals around them instead of letting them sit untouched. If you have leftover holiday items you’re unsure how to use, Google is your friend. (or send me a DM!)
🍽️ Life is allowed
Previous plans and the occasional meal out are okay. The rule is simple: don’t schedule eating out just to avoid cooking.
That’s it, four simple rules! This isn’t about deprivation, just better intentions, smarter planning and saving a few bucks as we start the year.
