JB talk for the day:

The talk of the day is the federal court ruling out of Texas striking down the NFA registration requirement for certain fi****ms covered by the now-$0 NFA tax. It's definitely a significant decision—but nothing has changed yet.

The judge issued a 7-day stay of the ruling to give the federal government time to appeal, and it's widely expected that the Department of Justice will do exactly that.

So what does that mean?

In my opinion, this is far from over. I expect this case to work its way through the appeals process, and it could ultimately end up before the U.S. Supreme Court. That means this is likely to be a long legal battle, not an overnight change.

If this ruling ultimately survives the appeals process, suppressors ("cans") and the other affected items could eventually be purchased through the standard firearm purchase process instead of the current NFA registration system.

For now, though, absolutely nothing has changed. The current laws, registration requirements, and purchasing process all remain in effect until the courts say otherwise. Don't make any purchasing decisions based on headlines alone.

I'm asking everyone to rally around our James City family. If you're looking for a place to grab lunch or dinner, please make it Beartown.

We were just talking last night about how the road construction has cut their lunch crowd by 40–50 percent. Now, more than ever, they need this community behind them.

Please get out there. Eat. Bring your family. Bring your friends. Spend what you can. Every meal, every dollar, and every show of support will help lift this family during an incredibly difficult time.

Let's show them what our community is all about.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Shawn Hoveland, owner of Beartown Bistro & Pizza Company.

Shawn was so many things to so many people. He had an incredibly kind and generous heart, along with a goofy, silly side that could always make you laugh - or, every now and then, roll your eyes.

He was passionate about the things he loved, especially Beartown, the food he created, and the life he built. He loved to write, something anyone who followed his weekly special posts certainly knew. He of course loved to cook, and above all else, he loved being a father.

This is a tremendous loss for everyone who knew and loved Shawn. We ask that you please give our Beartown family the time and space to process, grieve, and navigate the days ahead together. We will be taking things one day at a time, and Beartown will continue to stay open because it’s truly what Shawn would have wanted.

Please keep Shawn’s family, friends, the Beartown team and the community that loved him in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Shawn will be deeply missed. 🤍
