Trojans ready to ring in new football season
-By Jordan Honeycutt
TRENTON – At Jones Senior High School, enrollment may be low as it is one of the
smallest public schools (enrollment-wise) in the state.
However, Head Football Coach Stephen Perry said competitiveness and desire from his
players is far from low.
Perry is entering his third season as the school’s head football coach and he knows the
challenges they face.
“We’re facing adversity with the low enrollment, losing some kids to private schools,
home school, things like that,” Perry said. “We’re hoping once school starts back, we
can get some more athletes out there but our kids are more locked in this year, we feel
like as a coaching staff. They are tired of hearing the noise, the trends, whatever.”
Perry said the staff is already seeing some improvement from a year ago.
“Measuring their heart, you’d think we were a 7A or 8A school,” Perry said. “We know
we have to be better offensively – we struggled scoring last year and defensively, we
have to tackle better and we really have emphasized that preparing for the season.
The Trojans will kick off their season Aug. 21st , at home, against South Lenoir.
Perry said the team has been meeting up on their own, working on their craft and trying
to get better.
Jones Senior went winless a year ago and the coaches, players and community are
hungry to get back into the win column.
